I never liked the musician, talent contest atmosphere. I've done it though, and haven't had too many disappointments so far.

It's so much easier and relaxed starting a band with your friends. It can also be a curse, because usually when a band breaks up, it's not under good terms.

You must be comfortable with the guys you're playing with. I have seen musicians get fired simply because they were not likeable. I have also seen them replaced by musicians with less skills simply because they were likeable. Being personable/likeable can be the most important "talent" to land you a job

Most definitely! I try to be as loose as I can, even though a first time meeting and try out can make anyone a little nervous. It's like you're stepping in someone else's house, so having a healty amount of respect and personality requires good balance.
