Uh...I'm scared to ask about Great White's theatrics.

Theatrical? Skinny Puppy! I've never seen a band so dramatic with so many props in my life. Ministry was good too.

Right on Stranger, JT is awesome. Also theatrical:

Genesis (Lamb era)
Floyd (especially DSOTM era)
The Fixx (Cy is very theatrical)
Kate Bush

I was the Green Faerie for Halloween. I think I'm going to turn her into a regular character at the faire with my bottle of absinthe.

Some really interesting choices...I'm going to have to look into some of these!

Chaeya, I don't know... . I'm STILL recovering from my "experience". I didn't see the green fairy...just the bottom of the porcelain altar... .
Thanks, BTW. You had mentioned that my pic looked a little "steampunky"...I had to look it up! But I totally dig that! As a matter of fact, I'm kind of thinking of using it for a performance theme. I'm even thinking about props, etc. Really fits some of the newer music I've been working on.

I looooove steampunk. I just got a new tailcoat and top hat, I have to show it off soon.

Check out this band, Abney Park, they're a total steampunk band:

Lights drive me crazy sometimes because I can't see half the time or they're so darn hot. I like lights, especially if it fits with the theme of the musicians. I'd like to see a clever display of cool spotlights that aren't so bright, just enough.

All the light shows these days are going L.E.D. they put off no heat whatsoever use less Elec. the colors are much richer they are basically inteligent lighting that pic. I use as my avatar (the purple haze) are them!

SP, I know what your saying...If the music isn't there, the rest is just b.s....

I'm interested in both audio AND visual performance. I personally believe that is what is missing these days-the visual part. We've discussed it here a number of times, but today, the live musician is competing with DJ's, karaoke, etc. I feel you have to bring it ALL. You have to offer the audience something that they simply cannot get from anyone else. For me, as a songwriter/performer, I don't have the luxury of falling back on familiar material ("cover songs"). That isn't why I do this. Therefore, I have to sell myself to the audience that much more. That can only be acheived by giving the best performance possible: Tight, good music, flowing effortlessly from one song to the next, jumping through hoops of fire... ...whatever it takes.

The best shows ARE shows, imho. Not merely the use of effects, but using the band's individuals' personalities for the best effects. Gimme some personality, dammit, or stay off the stage. If all ya wana do is stand there behind your guitar, you may as well play in your closet & never ever come out.

Ian Anderson may look like a crazed hippie to ya, Zip, but he uses facial expressions, body language, & a WORLD of energy in his performances, which more than make up for his rather pedestrian vocals. He is a master of theatrics as well as a master of music.
