"This kid is brilliant straight A's without trying he will graduate this spring!"

Obviously, the weed is causing permanent brain damage and destroying his ability to function.

Tell him that the laws regarding weed are an assault on his personal freedom, and another attempt to control his life by a bunch of people who should mind their own business.

"Like it or not, it's illegal. Having drug crimes on your record will screw your plans for a good life for a long time, no matter how smart you are or how many good grades you get."
"If you get busted again, or get busted with 'more', or get busted with other illegal drugs, you are screwed."

You are not screwed and it is not illegal, everywhere.
Your kid is smart you said, so he probably knows its not
illegal in Alaska or California. Sure there are specific rules for that
but there are documentaries and news stories on TV and its talked about
all over the internet like here and now. Logic tells you it will some day
be legal with rules to possess and buy it in this Country. The tax money
from it will be toooo inviting to the Gov. and it will be justified with
getting rid of the pot growers in Mex. When you act like it's the end of
the world and freak-out they probably look at you like a dinosaur. You
may be acting like your own parents.

You went through it and they will go through it JH. You should look
at the BIG picture. Crime, Poorly timed babies, Drunk Drivers, Disease,
there are many other things in life more likely to ruin it than weed.
Honesty and facts are your best weapons in this situation. As they
grow up so many other things will become more important than
smoking pot. You need to help make other things more important in
their lives. Now that's a big job that takes hard work.

They're worth it.

Crip IMHO you are in for a rough road with your kids.
It sounds like you will overreact and cause your children to
become ingenious about keeping you from knowing what
they are really doin.

Keep your children close and THEIR and YOUR enemies closer.

It was just an observasion, remember this is a public forum kinda.
I am not defending drug use. I am pointing out that it is part of every childs
life now and we were all children once and know there are things that
go on with our kids that we don't know about.

sry if you were offended by my remark.
I tend to be honest to a fault sometimes.

I have 2 sons, one biological from first marriage and one I have grown
to Love from 2nd wifes previous. 25-27
Two very different young men. I try to apply what I told JH to them.
Honesty and Facts. With one the honesty repels him and the other
brings him closer to me. In the end I want them both to be able to say
that I always told them the straight up truth. Good or Bad.

Again I am sry.

Weed should not be illegal. But it is. Facing the consequences of your actions is the making of a MAN.

Don't want to get busted for weed. Don't do weed.

It's really pretty simple.

Make choices, and live by them.

None taken... just very adamant on my stance as I witnessed first hand the path that it leads... even if it's only weed!

Well, really, a person can overdo or get addicted to just about ANYTHING; gambling, food, sex, etc. (GF was addicted to nosedrops and alka-selzter!). A lot of it depends on the individual's own physiological and psychological make-up.

If a parent wants to steer their kids away from something they think is risky, being honest and leading by EXAMPLE is the best way to get through to them. Being viewed as a liar or hypocrite just undermines any parental authority.

My folks tried to steer me away from drugs but had never done any.
And they had no idea of what they we're talking about with their
warnings.
Me, on the other hand can tell mine just exactly why I think it's a bad idea. I also tell them that anything you "do" can be ok, but if it's "doing
you" your screwed.
Some people have addictive personalities, this is true.
For myself I was able to just put cocaine down and walk away from it.
The perceived benefits were few and the risk too great so I just quit.
I do not consider myself as special or different, and believe anyone can do it. It's just a matter of will.
