I've been looking for a bass player, hand percussionist, and (yet another) female back-up vocalist.
So - I've been combing the ads.
.
And i saw a really weird ad.
It said "Looking for Talented Rap Artists."
??
Talented rap artists??!!!
.
Hahahahahaha!
No such thing!

I won't say they need no talent. They need at least 1/4 as much talent as a drummer, & they need to think on their feet.

I just wish there was melody involved somehow...

Tell it Eminem or Jay-Z. They're laughing all the way to the bank. Those guys aren't your competition so why worry about it? I don't like polka music but I don't complain about it or begrudge the famous polka bands. The universe is a big place, room enough for all tastes and talents.

What ever. Biggie Smalls was VERY talented. Timing, rhythmS, PHRASING etc. The beastie boys are upright bass playing, skins bashing, guitar wailing studs on top of rapping with all of those skills. Eminem has a ton of talent too. A lot of their lyrics might... might suck or be offensive but so are plenty of lyrics of EVERY genre.

Sounds like some geezers complaining about those "squalling guitars" Hendrix was playing in the 60's.

You don't realize how good you have it with the rap you hear until you hear a bad rap artist.

There is good and bad of everything, but it's all in the eyes (and ears) of the beholder. Don't like it, change the channel. Heck, I bet there's someone somewhere that likes your music too :)

I was thinking more of 2 things, - no melody, and the fact that they copy other people's music in loops, rather than picking up a guitar and playing it fresh.
.
Gotta admit that the rappers who can think on their feet and create rhyming stuff on the fly are talented.
I know that I can't voice a lungfull of rhymes on the fly . . .
.
As for folks liking my music? Naaaah, don't think so - my stuff is too simplistic and overdone.
:)
.
Gotta agree that there's potential money in every genre.
.
I wonder what percentage of the entire listening audience on earth likes rap, vs rock, vs jazz, folk, metal, polka . . .
I'll bet rock is in the lead.
Followed maybe by pop, metal and folk.
Followed by rap and polka . . .
I suspect that jazz has less than 5%, rock is probably over 55%

I don't care for Rap at all. Nope not one little insy weensy bit.
It's irrelevant to me how much $ someone makes doing this that or the other thing. People are STUPID.
And will pay for all kinds of crap.

That said, and I've said it before but feel it bears repeating

We played a gig in the local park that included some soul singing and Rap, along with us of course, and some Christian heavy metal.

The Rap guys had my head bobbin and my toe tappin more than the metal band.

Go figure??

The only real explanation for that, Sans, is that the metal band (or wanna-be metal band) sucked. It's really that simple...

Way wrong. It's not what you think of as melody. It is melody however. Very little rap has no melody. Puff daddy is monotone. Even the oldest rap has melodies. Here is one from a few years ago that is clearly loaded with melody and clearly rap. I don't particularly like this one but it shows melody.

Wrong again. Ever heard of the roots?

And as I mentioned the beastie boys...

And conversely here is a modern singer singing over samples...

It is very difficult to have no melody in rap. To be monotone the whole time is rare. The melody just doesn't appeal to you.

Here is a great example of killer rap to me. Lots of creativity, melody, rhythms, etc...

I don't care for what rap has degenerated into. However, you do need talent to rap. I can't rap worth a darn, because you do need talent to "spit" as they say. Many rappers are able to do battle with one another and rap on the fly which isn't at all easy to do.

Eminem is a phenomenal rapper, so was Tupac and Biggie Smalls. I give credit where credit is due regardless of whether I like the music or not.
