My tastes run analog, it just sounds better to me and that is an opinion.
Music construction for me is merely, Sonar 6 Cakewalk, using a Guitar Rig 2 sound I can match up with equipment I already have to construct the song or sound I desire.
Once I have the sound I want, I lay down the tracks, being careful to use vocal track in channel 1 and master it as well as possible.
Once that's done, I learn to play the piece as a whole and use a powered analog mixer to fine tune whatever ails.
If you want a live recording, plug into the board. If not, the original Cakewalk recording is usually very nice sounding and passable for demo purposes.
You do not need the firewire etc, it's just more lights and buzzers to keep you amused for the moment. I would add that this setup is dependant on a certain style of music. The more compression/distortion one uses on the signal, the more important the digital part becomes.
My 2 cents.
