Fishing for ideas for the construction of a light & sound stage in my shop for creating videos.

Thinking of utilizing bolts of black material for a ceiling and the stage right and left "walls ".

Slotted elevated drum platform to shoot smoke under.
Some bright while strobes on the back wall and rear corners.
Led sound activated lighting from the rafters.

Some of you I'm sure have some thespian back ground in stage construction.

Perhaps some thin wood strip framing and painted cardboard ??

Been looking into the lights / fog investment, and need to keep the set expenses down some.

Open to any ideas.

Mike Nesmith used some dark green garbage bags taped together with a fan on them, & it looked pretty cool, for the background.

Just remember that it only needs to be structurally sound for the length of time you'll be filming, yet still look like a million bucks.

I have access to smoke/bubble machines. Check out CL. You could try to rent?

Flashing strobes work well, too, & are often underused.

It's a toss up as far as durability. Part of me wants to construct something semi permanent using 2" x "2 s & paneling for the side walls.
The back wall is plywood and partially carpeted.
The ceiling would be about 9' to the 2" X 6" rafters.
Plenty of space for mounting some wash & effect lighting.

I figure if I constructed it in a semi permanent fashion I might be able to off set some of the cost by leasing time to other local bands.

It's 30' from the back wall where the drum riser will be from where I would have to film.
Think I'll check with my wife's cousin whom does some videography to see if that would be enough clearance.
I would think it should be plenty

If you are going to invest in lights and fog, etc., why not just stand-mount them off camera? Then they could be torn down and used on gigs when you're done shooting. You could also rent them out as a package.


For the backdrop, if you can get a hold of an old overhead projector, you can hang a white sheet behind the band and project any images that you want. If you want to get fancy, you could use a modern computer projector, for a lot more $, but you would be able to project anything you have on your computer. The old overheads can be found for cheap.

There are also programs that will allow you to project light shows. You can even sync them to the music.


As for lighting/fog, you might want to buy used. There are a lot of bands/DJ's who are getting out of the biz and selling lighting systems cheap.
I just bought two 4-light PAR fixtures for $10 at a garage sale. They work fine.

Saw a show on how they used to use colored oils
( gee is that racist too ?? )
in water on an old glass clock face on top of one of those overhead projectors.
Shine from the back side of a taunt white sheet ( with eye holes in it ) for a psychedelic effect.

Apparently a lot of bands utilized this low tech ( very ingenious ) technology back in the 60's.
