I'd like to add, be your true self don’t try to be somebody else in the hope to impress because it won’t last.

Be prepared to play song that you don’t like and play’em well.

Recognize being part of a band is akin to a job not a hobby.

Last and not least be ready to compromise with smile with band members, disagreements are the norm rather than the exception.

Not easy to reconcile several different personalities, taste of music and direction of a band.

Nav, I think what you say is probably true for cover bands more than original projects. The Farleys have been together 11 years and we've never had a band argument. Not to say we haven't had our share of drama; I've had to fire several drummers and a guitar player along the way. But the band always agreed on what was necessary.

Yeah your distinction between cover and original projects is probably right but IMO still requires the ability to compromise, we all can name countless successful bands duos, trios who broke up at the pick of their careers only to reunite years later often too late hoping to pick up where they left off to no avail, curiously enough most successful band ended up breaking up not so much for the music but for reasons not relate to it, as a music lover and player I’m sure you know some examples.

I found over the years that playing songs originals or other is easier than keeping a band together for an extended period of time.

Your point on the longevity of the farleys tells me that you guys have understood the importance of the give and take congrats for that, 11 years is an eternity in the music business wish you 11 more years.

DO:
Bring stew.
Laugh at everybody's stupid jokes.
Shoot heroin if it's offered.
Wear really tight pants.

DON'T:
Listen to a damn thing I just said.

Whoever said LISTEN is a good chip shot.

I've been to a few jams I just was so revolted, I left my stuff in the car and feinted interest while trying to get out before anyone noticed.

lol Even those were fun/educational.

Regarding listening - yeah, it's much harder to learn anything when your mouth is open . . .

I went one step further, I went to your profile page to listen to your playing posted there. There's nothing there for me to listen to. Do you have any of your music posted anywhere on the internet? If not I would say DO post some of YOUR playing somewhere for people to listen to. Time permitting DO get a CD of the band's playing if available and if they are a cover band get their set-list and DO learn as many tunes on that set-list as your time permits. If you learn some of thier tunes backwards and forwards you'll know when you get together with them within a few songs whether they are worth playing with and vice-versa. Some people have said DO NOT go in with an attitude. I say DO go in with an attitude that is based on your KNOWLEDGE of the material and that you ARE a potential asset to ANY band you join. I NEVER join a band that has heavy drinkers or drug addicts. You'll never get anywhere with them unless you enjoy getting high as well. If so you'll most likely get in somebody's basement and STAY there...

Just go in there n be your self and do your thing; you already know to be prepared, just take the ride and see what happens. Don't over complicate it and interrupt flow!

Best o Luck!

P.S. if they tell you that they drink at practice and you drink, prolly oughta bring that 6 pack but no more than that; wouldn't wanna come off as a piss head!

Don't make appointments with the group then cancel it on the last minute.

Sorry....I let them know right off the bat that it's not a "job" for me... It's supposed to be fun unless they can promise me a weekly salary, it ain't a job! Right off the bat, whatever band I've been in, any song selection in the set list that anyone does not like for whatever reason gets thrown out! There have been quite a few songs that I would've loved to have played in my personal projects that I've thrown out due to one member or another not liking it! Big fukkin' deal.....one moves on..... and I've done the same in other members' projects. If one proves his self worth and honestly shows some decent skills as well as being a productive member, there should be no reason whatsoever to play even ONE song that any member is not comfortable with. This is happening right now with my present band and we've already thrown out 4 songs and replaced them with 4 more to everybody's liking! NEVER PLAY A TUNE THAT ANY MEMBER OF YOUR BAND DOES NOT LIKE! Smiles and confidence on stage is the recipe for success!

I have to agree Crip, it's not a job in the sense that you can depend on it for income. However, I try to conduct myself in a business-like way when dealing with band mates, club owners and managers. That's not to say I don't have a cocktail and enjoy myself too - I do. But I never party before a rehearsal or gig, and I keep it to a minimum when at the show. And if I say I'm going to show up at a certain time, I'm there.

I also agree regarding the cover tunes issue. If four guys can't come up with 40 tunes that they all like and agree on they probably shouldn't be a band. Same is true in an original band; if I bring in a song that's too heavy for the rest of the band, guess what - we don't do it. Everyone should at least enjoy the music they play, if not love it. I've seen too many miserable guys playing "Mony Mony" for 1000th time. Just quit if you hate it that much!

Yeah, I really want to one day do "Mistral Wind" by Heart. It's one of my favorite favorite songs and it gives me chills. Alas, hubs gives me 1001 reasons why we can't do it, besides it's old, it's dated, and he said the only reason I'd be singing it is to get my imaginary dick hard.

Yes, one moves on.
