sounds like some sort of bleed through...
is it on a separate power supply? is the power supply orig?
have you tried a battery?
next guess would be check the wires leading to the control for range and/or sensitivity... sometimes if they cross near the output wires you can get some bleed through but on this pedal I bet the pots are soldered right to the board so... i dunno...

I tried 2 different batteries... Same results.

On a Visual Sound 1 spot, the nature of the interference changed, and became a quick blip. A little better, but annoying just the same. However, run through a compressor, it becomes apparent that it is still there, underneath everything.

open it up and look inside. there might be a trimmer on the effect feedback and maybe it just wasn't set right from the factory? has it always been like this? did it just start?

What would a trimmer look like?

and yeah, it's always been like this, i got it used from musician's friend. It was in the "like new" category, so I'm a little pissed... but it would actually cost me more to return it than I paid for it, so i'm stuck trying to beat it into shape.

haven't found a schematic but a trimmer would be a little blue or gray square with a little white 'plus' in the middle that you can turn?

I have those for specific frequencies, I think each one adjusts one filter. I'll play with those when I find a tool small enough to reach them. Thanks.

what's the point? Top one's set all the way down, bottom one's all the way up. If nothing else, i can probably find some better tones.
