Would your band turn away a good vocalist simply because she's female?

Something's wrong with this post. "YEARS of trying to find a band" "THOUSANDS of ads on HUNDREDS of websites." Aside from the exaggeration you're going about your search the wrong way. Perhaps instead of trying to find a band you should be searching for ONE very good country guitarist and start out as a duet. Perform at open mikes, coffee houses, private parties, etc. Think small venues and starting out simple. Ideally this guitarist has some original material and YOU should be writing original material as well. Better yet if the guitarist can sing a little. You've got the good looks and your voice sounds fine, but your goals in a small town are TOO BIG. It should be much easier to build a band from a basic duo. Develop your own music and put your own personalities into the songs. It's also never too late to learn an instrument yourself. A lot of good things would happen if you picked up an acoustic guitar and learned some simple country rhythm on it. Just a thought...

No offense bob but - well, maybe I am doing this all wrong. But if getting myself in a band will move me up to playing birthday parties in the woods like the video you have posted, I might just stick to what I'm doing.

Your Morgan Fairchild looks and Reba voice will
open a few doors but at 36+ you're a little late
to the party.

You're taking Bob the wrong way! He's offering helpful criticisms and suggestions to you Merilee. Grow some thicker skin, or find a new business. Because I can assure you this... In THIS industry, the criticisms and brutal honesty, only get more intense, the higher the level you achieve. You've got to roll with the punches, dismiss those criticisms that are not applicable, and ADOPT and WORK YOUR ASS OFF, with those criticisms that ARE accurate and helpful.

And no offense to you either Merilee, but like Bob, I have been doing this a LONG TIME. We've both had our music played on radio. Had some important names in the business sit in with our bands. Played some of the best venues in our respective areas, etc...

Learn to spot the people who are being REAL with you... the ones that are actually giving you CONSTRUCTIVE advice. Then bounce that advice off OTHER people who also know the business. And take what you learn and GROW, and let it make you, even more talented, even more professional, and even more READY to take the opportunities, that often come when we least expect it, and when we were NOT fully prepared.

There are ALOT of veteran musicians here Merilee.

We help each other.

You'll see SONGWRITERS, ARTISTS and BANDS get better, because of what they learn here, or the suggestions they get... from how to improve their acts, to better equipment to use... How the music business works... Mixing and mastering advice for improving their demos, etc...

This forum is a GREAT tool, for getting where you want to be!

EVERYONE here, could share a story, of how they have improved, or learned something important for their craft, from the vast collection of knowledge available from the members here.

Bob was trying to HELP you, not hurt you! :-)

You can get away that sometimes, in Country, Blues, and maybe a few other genres. Although... the Country music business has changed alot in the last few decades. It's more pop and rock, and as a consequence, they are looking for the 20 somethings too now. But you are... even still, seeing, especially BANDS, that are making it in country, and have 30 and 40 year olds in them.

But the comment that keeps coming back up, and which I agree with as well, is that she lacks an EDGE. Something that would separate her from the multitudes of YOUNGER and PRETTIER artists that are fighting for a chance too. And there are ALOT! And with the success of cross-over teen artists like Taylor Swift, there will only be MORE!!!

Gotta find an EDGE... a NICHE, to be successful in, and be able to compete with that.

Attitude is half the battle, when you are fighting for a place at the big table.
Some can't handle that, and then wonder why they keep getting placed at the kiddie table!

LOL

But... He's the one who insisted she take that picture and post it!

She's attractive, and has some talent.

That's a dime a dozen.

Yet she's offended at the advice, that can change that equation, and give her a fighting chance.

Sad. :-(

Well that depends, Klugmo. If she's just looking for a band to play around with and get some gigs, she doesn't have to be 18. Now, if she's trying to be a big star, yeah it's tough in a crowded field like pop and country, and she already acknowledged that earlier.

You guys run this poor lady off already. Ha ha!

I thought your advice was very good, Bob. I didn't think of that, I was thinking tribute band, but yeah, at least with a duo she could do some coffee houses.

Like here in the OC where I am, there are a lot of Farmer's Markets, street fairs and festivals and there are a lot of musicians who busk there, so that would have been a great idea. I don't know why she got upset.

You know, that's the beauty of advice, you take what you can work with and leave the rest.

Oh well.
