Friday, August 20, 2010 - Rasta and I went to support our friends Caustic Attitude at Metal Fest 2010. All-female band Gates of Babylon played, as did Fall From Disgrace and a couple of other bands whose name I didn't catch. My question to them would be: why can't the front-man/woman do something other than scream and grunt? Every song sounds the same, no dynamics. I guess I'm just old.

My guess is that it was the only thing left for them to irritate the older generation with.
Then they brainwashed themselves into thinking it sounded good.
Add in people jumping on board because 'thats what the kids want', and here we are...

Thankfully, I think I've noticed a trend towards the sing/sceam or sing/growl aprroach. kind of slitting it up between singing sections and noise sections.
Theyre bringing singing back into the equation at least.

Wow. That must have been awful, jimmy.

I can only imagine that it started off sounding like a pig being chased through some loud assembly line with a cattle prod, & that the chase went on & on & on & on for HOURS! (Poor little piggy!)

It's true - no dynamics. Every song starts as loud as it gets, & it stays that way, overlaid with grunting & squealing & screeching & growling.

I'm sorry, youngun's, that sh*t just doesn't do anything for me, & while you may be able to tell the subtle differences between a grunter & a growler & a shrieker & a squealer, I haven't enough interest to spend the time to learn it all.

It's icky sh*t designed to make you get pissed off & punch the ppl around you...& I was never into that.

I hear ya! JD. it gets very repetitious quickly, as so does alot of different style's, genre's, & certain sub-genre's do.
And everyone used to think that the grunge era was really lacking in the artistic arena (which they were) compared to alot of the more progressive rock from the 70s & 80s.
I like some of the scream & growl stuff, but it has to be done with a little class musically anyway, atleast some kind of 'Funk' feel & sound with that style of music for my personal taste.
I think it could be that we are just getting old JD. :)

It's one of the main reasons I'm just not up to speed on new Metal today. I just can't relate. I'm not the only rivethead who isn't a fan of modern Metal. Nobody I know of "gets it".

There's only a handfull of bands that are memorable anymore, but even they sound the same in a lot of ways.

It has nothing to do with being "old" anymore. Younger guys/girls are favoring the stuff from from the 80's...it's just better, original...and...better.

Thanks for noticing that Zip. We (Crowfeather) are doing that and because of the slightly different writing that I've brought into the band, there's even more singing and the scream/growl stuff is just more of an accent (which is cool if used correctly). But...how many singers can actually do that style correctly? The answer is NOT MANY. It's another way for guys like us to seperate ourselves and rise above the rest. Jay is truly an amazing singer. He even does Beatles, Neil Young, ect. songs in his acoustic duet.

Jim: I bet that you also noticed a lack of meaningful solos as well. The big shows that I did with Desperate Echo all had bands like those and they couldn't believe how I was able to play solos to stuff like that. Back to the drawing boards kids...hahahahahahahahaha! Then again...those bands really just consist of 2 rhythm players anymore...sad, but true. It's much more interesting if you have a lead player and a decent rhythm player that can throw around melody leads in harmony together that follow the vocal line...

Yeah, imagination is being just washed away. It has nothing to do with "kids today". Many youngsters are into the music of yesterday. My daughter teaches in a day care center. There was a little 8 year old kid that is all geeked out now because she got to eat lunch with ZZ Top who performed later that day at the fair.

I think it's great that youngins are listening to older music. Eventually original, one of a kind bands will start coming out of the woodworks, cause they're being fed the right ear candy to grow on.
