Far Out

I had to watch this after that statement.

(gasp) Egads ...

Cap, it's prolly cuz that's the only way one can get into the endless groove...otherwise you wanna just yank your hair out by the rootsm punch the nearest person, & scream incoherently at ppl on every street corner!

Where were you in the 60s ?
This reminded me of cheech and chong or
the Beatles sitting around the studio
dreaming of Seargent Peppers and playing
sitar smoking oil.

Guess I'm just an uncouth westerner.

I quite agree, Zip. This is one of the most popular music styles in the world, though, hence the moniker, "world beat."

I am hopelessly American in my music preferences, I suppose. I like melody, verses, choruses, bridges, intros & outros. This is just a loop of sound, to my ears, with no real direction, or change, or even a point of origin, it seems.

It's like when I asked Shredd about the lack of the bridge in reggae, & he told me that it would ruin the groove. I can understand the viewpoint, but it doesn't really yank my attention, the way other styles do...though there is some reggae that I can really appreciate.

We seem to have a need for the new & different, in this culture, that's not necessarily there in other cultures. I feel a need to explore this. There may be something quite spiritual about the drone that sucks your mind in & lets it either rest, & rejuvenate, or to internally explore the alternatives inherent in the groove within one's own mind. Kinda like the dif between a movie & a book. We all hear & perceive it all differently, in our own personal & unique fashion, & the endless groove may well guide one to that internal expansion on the groove better than the distracting, constantly changing, western view of music, which lays everything out for you, & there's no real need to expand upon it, or to work your mind at all.

In the west, we consume music. Elsewhere, they become involved in it, if only in their minds.

It's something to think about, anyway, when there isn't anything else going on...

I do think I'm going to experiment in this area a bit...after all, I DO always say that one of the reasons I got into music was to open ppl's minds, rather than to close them.

Its a great vid. Phil I enjoyed it! My musical roots are so all over the place when you are a classically trained (on violin) redneck (with a mullet) from Texas that likes music from rock&roll to jazz to motown well you can enjoy just about any music!

Yeah...or it all may be just fluffy cloud-like thoughts, & I'm just fulla sh*t, huh?

I've often wondered about the huge differences in musical preference around the world, though.

I don't think the lack of change in world beat has anything at all to do with laziness, or a lack of imagination on the part of the performer or composer. I think their style may depend so much more on the imagination of listener & the dancer, than we do in the west.

Where we control the listener, they allow the listener to roam, & enjoy it their own unique way.

Yeah right, remember, beheading and watching animals pull people apart used to be a form of entertainment in many of these places.

Yeah, & hanging them by the neck, or setting them on fire, used to be entertaining, here.

I doubt that the music has anything to do with the horrible things we can do to one another, really.

Thanks, Prevost.

And thanks to everyone who've commented, whether good or not so good. I can certainly understand both points of view...
