I quite agree, Zip. This is one of the most popular music styles in the world, though, hence the moniker, "world beat."
I am hopelessly American in my music preferences, I suppose. I like melody, verses, choruses, bridges, intros & outros. This is just a loop of sound, to my ears, with no real direction, or change, or even a point of origin, it seems.
It's like when I asked Shredd about the lack of the bridge in reggae, & he told me that it would ruin the groove. I can understand the viewpoint, but it doesn't really yank my attention, the way other styles do...though there is some reggae that I can really appreciate.
We seem to have a need for the new & different, in this culture, that's not necessarily there in other cultures. I feel a need to explore this. There may be something quite spiritual about the drone that sucks your mind in & lets it either rest, & rejuvenate, or to
internally explore the alternatives inherent in the groove within one's own mind. Kinda like the dif between a movie & a book. We all hear & perceive it all differently, in our own personal & unique fashion, & the endless groove may well guide one to that internal expansion on the groove better than the distracting, constantly changing, western view of music, which lays everything out for you, & there's no real need to expand upon it, or to work your mind at all.
In the west, we
consume music. Elsewhere, they
become involved in it, if only in their minds.
It's something to think about, anyway, when there isn't anything else going on...
I do think I'm going to experiment in this area a bit...after all, I DO always say that one of the reasons I got into music was to open ppl's minds, rather than to close them.
