In the last few months the activity on Myspace has decreased dramatically and Facebook traffic has increased. Are the trendy social websites rising and falling in just a few year's cycle? Seems like everybody has to be on one and then a few years later it's passe...

I think your right Bob. My plays have dropped considerably on myspace. I used to get between 30 and 50 plays a day, and up to 250 on days that I sent add requests. Now I get up to 60 or so if I send requests and as few as 1 or 2 on days that I don't. I have over 32,000 plays but at this rate it will take a year to reach 40,000.
People just don't seem to go there to listen to music anymore... could have something to do with the drag ass loading and the commercials.

Seriously.. Facebook has been a big part of our success (over the past year). I would have to say, it appeals more to the adults like promoters etc.. You have to be strategic, but if done right, there's no better promotional tool to get your music "out there". No fancy artwork on the pages to make a page load slowly. Just business. Just keep in mind, that the music, and live shows are still #1. Does no good to aggressively promote if you can't back it up live or with good recordings and/or songs.

Secondly, it's better fan interaction. I'm not a tweeter. Some people are into that, but I think that's something that works better if you're already famous and don't really want to interact all that much. That seems to be more of a " I talk, you listen" kind of thing.

There's so much you can do on Facebook, it's sickning. For example. Did you know that if you put up an event flier for your gig, and tag all of the names of your friends (including bands) in that photo, that YOUR flier shows up FIRST in THEIR photos?? Crazy huh. A little unethical, and we delete any tag we see like that, and don't practice that tactic, but it does work.

HEY BANDMIX!! WANNA CREATE MORE TRAFFIC TO YOUR SITE??? GET A FACEBOOK PAGE! PROMOTE LIKE A MAN!

Hahaha.. They deleted the last thread when I mentioned Facebook.

Did you ever hear of a musicians website called Community Musician? When we first got our PC up and running and I started on the internet Community Musician was completely full of musician's classifieds. Now they don't even have a classified section. I guess websites coming and going is just like products coming and going. When a new technology is introduced somebody comes up with a competing technology almost instantly that makes it obsolete. Kind of like disc golf. One disc golf company, Innova, puts out a new model disc almost every month it seems. The hot disc golf driver today will be obsolete before you even learn how to throw it...

With traditional golf I can see where technological updates would help Golfers with better performance in the clubs, but one has to wonder how much they can really improve a frisbee, even a specially weighted and balanced one..and even if they can it still shouldn't push the cost of one past the $3 to $5 range..I hope. lol
hijack over now.

Myspace is alive and well, with musicians, there are still no shortage of bands, in fact the problem is bands outnumber people on there 10 to 1 anymore, hard to stand out like that, and with myspace anyone with photoshop and skills can have an almost professional looking page in no time. To have to sort through that is alittle rediculous.
But what good is a band rich myspace when there is no one the hear you roar?
My solution is to spead my band to everywhere, I want us on every social networking site I can find, go where the people are I always say.

So true man. If you look at our http://www.haleamano.com/ page, in the top right corner, you'll find links to a lot of the sites we're on. Myspace, Facebook, Reverb Nation, etc.. Although I personally don't Twitter, our band does. If you go to http://www.reverbnation.com/haleamano in the bottom right corner you'll se the previous sites along with out iTunes, Amazon, merch.. Basically, we have all of the sites tied together.

I didn't know until yesterday that we even have ringtones available on our Myspace through our Reverb Nation widget. We're workin' it man. Gotta keep up.

You asked how they can improve a frisbee? The world record throw for distance for a golf disc is now over 800 feet. It wasn't too long ago that the strongest arms could throw frisbees only 300 feet. There is an incredible rate of engineering upgrades that go into the new golf discs. Each model golf disc comes in anywhere from one to four or five different types of plastic. Go visit the Innova or Discraft websites and see the number of different model discs. It'll make your head spin.

My biggest problem with myspace is the losing of fans. I had over 8000 fans and didn't go to the site for about a year... I had less that 4000 fans left. Every day I lose a fan or 2 if I don't invite any. I would guess that the majority of those are porn hustlers that have been discovered. The site is crawling with em.

That may be one reason why Myspace use is going down. While browsing on Myspace and Jango my PC has been invaded by viruses the most. Those two websites have given me the most problems. I wonder if Facebook is having the same virus problems. When I get on Myspace or Jango I look for messages, and then get off as quick as possible.

I don't think MySpace is disappearing, far from it. There are some really nice people up there. I've been absent for a while, might be for some time too, but always I've met with nice folks who want to chat about music.

As I said in another post, things are quiet in general, and its summer of course. Those with work will be out doing it, those with none, perhaps writing and other things.

I'm a big fan of MySpace. It does what it says on the label. This is one area where I personally think it beats FB and RN. It's just there and doesn't require anything from you, its really up to you.

Just my tenner.
Cheers. Folks.
