Okay...I just got a slew of stuff from him, & it's all that Africanish stuff.

It doesn't look complicated at all. In fact, it's frighteningly simple. I say 'frighteningly' cuz you have to play a very simple line of notes like a looper, & you MUST be on time, every time, in spite of whatever else may be going on..

This stuff is some of the most boring to play, so the mind tends to wander, & when the mind wanders, the timing suffers, & thus the piece sounds poopy.

I'm gonna have to practice this, cuz it's a style that I've never done before. It isn't my cuppa, really, either. I like some changes, as you all know. In this, the groove must rule, & the groove is the same old, for up to 4 minutes at a time. It's like reggae, to me, in that the groove never wavers at all. I've done reggae, so I can do this.

It will be a challenge, but, listening to it, I think I'll be up for it, if I can OD on some Ginko Biloba...or maybe a touch of Ritallin, for my ADHD kinda concentration...

Hey, check out www.vagabontribe.com

That's the band. I thought at 1st it was just gonna be the one guy, but evidently, it's the whole schlameel.

I wonder if they'll mind when I show up in my daishiki!

After I'd worked on the stuff on bass, which is mainly what I'd advertised for, he told me he wants me on acoustic...so it's back to the damned woodshed!

...And then he asks - "Do you know any drummers that might be interested?"

AAAARGH!

Ya know, I've been listening to this stuff for a few days, & I know that this is one of the most popular musical forms in the world...hence the name "world beat."

I've come to the conclusion that I am incredibly, indelibly, stainlessly, Americanly WHITE!

I just have such a hard time thinking in terms of these 'endless groove' forms of music, & I'm beginning to doubt myself, here. My hands want to change it up, all on their own. My inner ear is constantly flubbing it up with other lines, layering in the new that fit to me, yet do NOT fit the musical form. This is just about the toughest thing I've ever attempted.

The band does this stuff all the time, I suppose, with various musicians, turning every gig into a freeform jam of constantly running lines of notes that weave into the whole, while the singer jams her words over it all in synchopated rhythms, which can ALSO distract my ear, & make me want to go in different directions. It's that dreaded ADHD. It has to be.

He says I'll be doing some hand-drumming, too.

My po' widdle headbone is going thumpetty-thumpetty-WHANG-CLANG, over & over again.

Try locking in with the drummer Phil

Prevost - you musta missed the part where I said ...And then he asks - "Do you know any drummers that might be interested?" LOL

Some of these tunes start out with that little tinkly noodlin', so popular in the genre, way before the drums & bass come in. It's fairly easy stuff, really. I just get so worried that I might lose my concentration on the new & the repetitious, ya know?

It's just the usual pre-gig jitters, I'm sure. I get 'em all the time.

Have you ever got together with ppl, & the sound you were making was so cool, downright ethereal, & then you lost it cuz you got caught up in LISTENING instead of playing? That used to happen to me in the jam situations, but atfer doing them for so long, I got over it. I haven't done any jams in awhile, though...

 Phil, often the best musician in the band is the one that can do the boring stuff well. I learned that at jazz camp. Your brain has been trained to change things up. This is why the steady world beat is going to be difficult. Don't let the ADHD take over...don't do it. AND get some sleep.
