IMO when vocals are unintelligible. Lyrics should mean something, otherwise why have them? Also when your eardrums start ringing. Music should fall within an audible range that DOESN'T hurt your hearing AND DOESN'T interfere with your ability to hear EVERYBODY in the band. Otherwise you're making noise. Just my opinion...

I totally agree Bob. That is one of the
things I like most about Country although
some Country artists seem more like heavy rockers
nowadays.

Whenever anyone drowns me out of the mix and steps on my toes I consider it noise. :D :D

Yes. Well. I just want everything louder than everything else. But I want it to be quietly louder.

On a more serious note: if you can't distinguish the individual instruments, there's something wrong and it's usually (although not always) volume.

If I have to use frikken hand signals to order a drink. or pick up a lady, it isn't music. It's noise.

Also when the bartenders at the far end of the bar can't hear the customer orders it's noise.

I guess too many people know how loud I can be. Maybe thats why I can't really sing.
SOUNDMAN : That was a great set, can you sing quietly, I got you all the way down and no one can hear the band. Yuk Yuk Yuk.

Almost all the open mike jams around here are filled with younger guys that think LOUD scales played over and over equate to great performances. I can't even get far enough away from the high volumes even when I go outside these clubs. Now that is too loud.

Subjective.

I think that the message in a song / performance is as important as the instrumentation.
I want to understand the words that are coming out of your mouth.
I want to feel the bass rumble.
I don't want the guitar to hurt my ears.
If I can speak loudly to the waitress or host that
" yes I do want a coffee, thank you "
And she get my message.
Volume appropriate.

I went to see this band...very good BTW... but the speakers were so loud that I believe I suffered some damage. That is not a good thing. :? Music should be loud enough to keep the audiences attention without being deafening. Music shoud be loud yet soft enough to allow the audience to talk amongst their friends, hear the words to songs, identify the instruments being played.
