It's harder to smell when you don't have to ride in the cattle car.

LOL Try Portland, they got all the cat pee smells you ever didn't want to smell and then some.

New England had a great scene as far as prog. rock and hardcore/metalcore, but lacks in actual creativity... Most of the clubs and venues are closing/closed in RI, and Boston has the same old same old. There are a ton of musicians, but I'll go with 95% lack the drive and know-how to do anything that'll matter much.

Speaking of drive, I believe a lot of younger musicians see the instant gratification phase this country is in, with the reality shows and American Idol providing instant stardom. People used to understand that in order to "make it", you had to pay your dues, travel a lot and build your fan base at every stop. Working your tail off (literally starving) was a must. I think that is still the case, but not the perception anymore.

Too many are relying on the Internet, Myspace and reality shows to get them there and that just does not happen to often. Gotta have the work ethic to be a success.

Sorry for the rabbit trail.....Did I mention Seattle is a good music city..

i agree and disagree, internet is a great way of connecting and supporting a fan base... and while i agree hard work and determination and touring and such are definitely the way to "make it", some people have had the benefit of getting signed to indie labels (like myself) just by uploading some songs and promoting the right way. which makes it easier to be noticed, and maybe not instantly or often, but it does make it easier.

You Miss Mary ... are a flute playing Goddess.

My comment was more about people in general, not just those residing in Cali.

Jessica. Reality check. Well stated. Thanks.

I'm out in the sticks, literally. Used to be in New Haven years ago. Was recently told by someone who lives there the music scene is close to dead. Tough to find places to play, tough to find committed people. Same with Hartford. He was telling me he went to see Percy Jones, one of the premier bass players on earth. SIX people were there besides those he went with. That seems impossible. But everywhere I have been, in speaking to people, it's the same story - local artists, especially original artists, get little support, in just about all genres. Too much stuff competing for people's time and money. Poor economy. Even for CCM, where at one time there were coffee houses dedicated to having local artists come and play and do their thing ... gone. Support just fell apart.

People shell out for big acts and big shows and local artists get neglected and forgotten, even bands with world class musicians. It has always been tough. Just seems alot tougher now. Cover bands get the lion's share in all genres.
