The fluid clogging your ears is a real culprit too Phil. Mine is always worse when I have a head cold.
All decongestants, antihistamines, and most analgesics really make my ears ring. I'd rather deal with the snot.
I wont take pseudophedrine at all for the terrible ringing it causes.

Loud music causes ear damage and tinnitus.
So many bands think it's cool to blast it 50 times louder than it needs to be to hear it.
But, comes the next day . . . and the next. And cummulative and permanant damage.
How cool is it to be the old guy who can't hear anything? You guys may not be old guys YET . . . but, God willing . . .
Do you want to have kids making fun of you, the old geezer who can't hear?
Think it can't happen to you, huh? Ha!
.
It's not cool to blind people. But apparently it seems to be cool to damage folks ears.
My ears ring for 3 days later, and the ringing helps serve to cover up high frequencies.
If you need to scream to the person next to you to be heard - you are in the midst of hearing damage.
I leave places where they play the music at volume level: "stupid."
.
OK - all that being saud . . .
(but wait! there's more!)
.
Tinnitus is ALSO caused by
> high blood pressure.
> coffee - which is a vasoconstrictor that raises blood pressure.
> fatigue
.
When I'm very, very tired, I get a 2nd ringing in my ears, and then a 3rd . . . If I'm so tired as to get a 4th ringing, I know that I am within an inch of getting whatever bug is currently going aound.
.
My ringing ia almost identical to the sound of the transporter beams in the original 'Star Trek' series. None of the spn-offs, only the original.
.
The ringing is often differnt from person to person . . .

I always used to play solo without monitors, & honestly, I've played solo much more than in bands. I've really tried to take good care of the hearing, but I think genetics got the better of me. I've had these problems for most of my life, but the tinnitus is a very recent thing. When I had my hearing tested for a job 15 yrs ago, I was told I had much better than average hearing for my age, which was 40 at the time.

I'll bet I've lost a good 30% over the last 15 yrs from all these infections, & right now I can't hear half as well as I did mere months ago...but that's hopefully due to the fluids within, & will go away like it usually does. The tinnitus starts up with the infections, but the last time it didn't go completely away, & it's quite distracting at this point, as I sit here at 4:30 in the frikken morning!

I can hear that hissing, white noise thing when I'm somewhere very quiet, but I've managed to escape the worst because I've always produced an abnormal amount of ear wax.
Blessing and a curse at the same time...
I used to walk out and unhook jets from the push tractor all the time and never wore ear plugs.
So I've kind of had natural earplugs most of my life.

lol Ya start looking at the "low-talkers" like they are talking about you.

My ears make an oscillating sound when my blood pressure gets high.

I just generally always use ear plugs and use a little Asprin to drop my blood pressure and the ringing goes away.

Pretty interesting - all those different sounds .
What's that oscillating sound? . . . never heard about that one.

Probably hearing his pulse. Not uncommon with hypertension.
It is one of the things that clued me into my hypothyroid disease.
That and not being able to complete a two hour Kung Fu work out anymore. :(

Oh - when you said 'oscillating,' I was thinking you meant it literally - like a changing frequencey, rather than a repetitive rhythm.
.
I get that pounding maybe a couple times a year, for about 2 seconds, maybe, like when I stand up quick - a sudden change in BP.
.
But I have the tinnitus constantly.
Yet, although I have a constant ringing in my ears, I can hear higher frequencies than most everyone I know.
I always scored exceptionally high in hearing tests . . .
So I don't think I really have any hearing loss - I just have to listen through the tinnitus . . .
I'm used to it; as long as I can hear high frequencies and soft sounds - I'm good with it.
.
(I'm adding this to this post a few days later)
. . . I was just reading another thread about booking gigs, and someone said the guy in charge said the band was too loud.
.
Anytime anyone says you are too loud - you ARE.
Aa a musician being told you are too loud, you may think that person is a wimp.
But - that person thinks you are offensive.
And for every one person who speaks up - there are ten people who are afraid to speak up.
No one has an assumed right to cause another person pain or hearing damage.
Anytime anyone says you are too loud - you ARE.
