A survey was done recently asking Americans who we gained our independence from. 26% of them did not know the answer. Some even thought it was the Japanese and Chinese. It's truly a sad time when so many Americans do not know that we fought the British for eight years to gain independence. I'm not sure that the Japanese and Chinese even knew there was an America in 1776.
Hey Sans thanks and you keep it safe too. There's going to be some fish near me this weekend who won't be safe...

In these politically contentious times, it's good to take a day and remember that:

1) Whatever you think freedom means, whether you agree with my definition or the definition of the guy that lives next to you, it's valuable and our forefathers worked very hard to get it.

2) Whatever you believe is necessary and sufficient to safeguard the freedoms we enjoy, there are those in the world who want to take it away from us.

3) Whoever the enemy actually is, it isn't the freedom loving, fellow Americans you argue politics with every day. The real enemies are apathy and ignorance.

For one day, all Americans are friends in a common cause. Or we should be. Remember that the reason we argue is because we all love our country and love our hard-won freedoms. We may disagree on what is best for our country, but we all agree that our country deserves the best we can provide.

By all means enjoy this 4th. If the powers that be have their way it may well be our last one worth celebrating.

I just read this a bit late but just to set the record straight , the British helped us defeat the French Canadians who were teamed up with the Mexicans. We beat them at the Alamo, just after Columbus landed and discovered Brazil. twenty years later we had to do it all again when the Germans attacked Puerto Rico. Then we signed the constitution in 1996 and everything has been hunky dorey ever since. God I love holidays......
