We had a good time this evening playing at Hebron Baptist Church.
The venue was small and we really had to keep the volume pretty low which made it hard to really get our signature sound out. We were expecting a youth group but it turned out to be a regular service.
I don't think some of the older members were expecting a GodRock band
Not at all pleased with the performance I personally turned in, but I guess we cant be red hot every time out.
We did get a nice " love offering " to help us along the way towards completion of our recording project, as well as an invitation to come back and play the revival scheduled for latter in the year.

Quiet is tough on a rock band Phil.
I never realized how much so until yesterday.
Even my son said after we got home that Ray and Tony's voices were not meant to be "subdued like that"
I'd like to blame attempting to play "subdued" was at fault for my botching the leads. But if I don't except responsibility for it ... I wont improve.

I've played some very small venues with electric drums, & it was still too loud when we used the PA, cuz there was no need for it, really, in a room that's about 30 x 40, if you sing loud at all, except for those whispery parts.

Yeah, it's tough.

Just little things called touch & dynamics. Something not practiced by a lot of musicians today. I an amazed at how quiet my drummer can play and not miss a lick. But he spends many hours a day working on quiet dynamics.

However do I know a good many more musicians that have no idea of playing softly means. They just can't do it. No techniques for it.

That is a good point Slacker G. I do work the finer points of dynamics on the songs that call for it by their nature. Especially when I'm playing the background or "fill" parts on my guitar. Working a lot with the volume control on my guitar as was recommended to me by JW. I attempted to use a volume pedal ( a la Pete ) but I really had difficulty getting a fluid repeatable control technique.
( To be fair, I think the old Ball pedal was a tad worn )
For sure though, applying a lighter attack and dynamic to songs I am accustomed to romping all over was a trial by fire.
But a gig is a gig ... and we did put back some bucks towards our next studio venture.

Also talked for a few with a musician from DECREE another local band with whom we played in the past. Seems they just got back from a big show they were invited to in Kentucky as well as working on an upcoming studio release..

Would seem that things are warming up for some of the local musicians.
That is always good news.
