Attention drummers!!!!!
I need input on good bass drum head so I can remove body pillow from inside bass drum.

Hey bud, I have tried a 1,000 different methods in my kick, to get the desired sound i want. I think the Genera 3G head (Evans) is the way to go. I stick one of those Danmar pads on there too. The ones with that fiberglass fabric, and the plastic disc on the inside. Pillows are too big, and muffle too much. So i use a couple of those little blankets they give you on airplanes when you fly. (TWA or DELTA)....LOL. I also use those Cobra beaters (TAMA) They are really light weight and have a heavy duty plastic on them, that never wears down. The combination of all these things will give you that punch and attack you want, plus the fat bottom bass sound, at the same. This is just an opinion, and you know what they say about those......... ......Later Ed

I am Feeling honored...... It's Funny, I was playing drums this morning with my 2 year old son. (who had a drum set before he could walk by the way) And i was tweeking his kit.....putting duct tape on the toms and such, and he said, "Mommy, Daddy is puttin' duff tape on my drums to mupple them." I once went to a Simon Phillips drum clinic in Boston, with my famous friend Mike Mangini (born and bread in Waltham Mass.) You may of heard of Mike. He holds 3 Guiness book of world records for fastest drummer. But anyway, Simon took a bass drum right out of the box and walked us through his method of tuning. He did some real interesting things to it. He stood on top of it, and jumped on it like a trampoline. To loosen the brand new head. Then he took hotel bath towels and rolled them up like buritos, and duct taped them to the batter heads of his bass drum, in a U shape at the bottom. He used soft felt beaters on his pedals, and it sounded incredible. My friend Mike uses Remo Black dot heads and fills his bass drum with tissue paper and three bags of cotton balls. Its funny cause some times the cotton balls shoot out the hole in front at gigs when he's playing. So you see Jon there is no rule of thumb on this. The kick sounds way better than it did with my body pillow but I'm still making my personal touches.Us,drummers,are so picky thats why I don't like playing on someone else's kit.I get nervous when I'm doing benefits,not having,either,enough drums or they are set up differently,etc.You know the routine,I'm sure..

Evans 3G head(s), flat felt tip beaters(for more solid round hit radius), thick beater pad(s), and "no" pillow. You may not like the sound at first, because you will be used to muffledness from the pillow, but you will get better boom, tone, and the recording wiil be great because you have such a different sound to work with. Good luck though either way dude!

Out of all the heads I've had on my kick drums, so far the best one that I've found is a Genera 3G head by Evans. Also...for added nice-ness, you can stick an Evans EQ pad inside your kick. It's an appendable pillow that bounces back and allows the tone of your bass drum to come out, but then immediately bounces back to kill any annoying overtones.
