Here's the deal (being in San Diego) all sunburn is accumulative. So you really ought not to get them (even if you are darker complexion).

So use SOLBAR Zinc (45 SPF) and be aware that if you drive the left side of your face gets a greenhouse effect from the car window. Wear a wide brimed hat (3 inches) like a cowboy hat or fedora. After 45 go to the dermatologist every 6 months and have them freeze off "keratosis" pre-cancers. Occasioally they'll give you a skin peel called Efudex.

If you do not then be prepared to have 1 inch circles cut out of your skin starting about 60. (Some women here getting big circles removed at 40! -- yeah, the beach bunnies). Also tanning salons are cancerous (Ultra violet B range = most dangerous)

Although melanoma kills very quickly all of them can turn on you (and kill you). A really lovely singer (Eva Cassidy) died at 30 from skin cancer -- beautiful woman, beautiful voice. (look her up on You Tube) Nobody is exempt.

Some really good research points out that the predisposition to cancers are more related to inadequate nutrition than UV exposure alone.

(Wish I could find a link but I don't remember where I came across it)

But of course, your quite correct about the correlation between UV and skin cancers.
Though we as a species derive great benefits from the sun and the vitamin D production it is notable that for the most part our grandfathers ( and for you whipper snappers out there, great grandfathers ) wore protective clothing while working outdoors.
Something many of us whom live in the modern society have long since forgotten.
Just like it's only been a few generations since thin women were shunned as unsuitable mates because they were not healthy enough to bear children and survive.

Nine minutes?

HAH!

I think that's a buncha hype they use to sell sunscreen.

Did you say 'Cripes'?

I have a real problem believing that the sun is so dangerous to ppl. Aren't we designed to live under its beloved shine?

See...I get my skin peels through sunburnt peeling!

I never understood the concept of the tanning bed. Just go outside, ppl! If you stay in the sun for 6 hours every day, yeah, you're an idiot & you'll hafta get holes cut out of your skin, cuz you're too stupid to keep it intact.

There are those that will tell you that the sunblocks are just as dangerous as too much sun, & I'm inclined to agree with that assessment, just based on the view that mankind has actually invented very little in the realm of health that is truly healthy. I can very easily believe that the metals in the sunblocks are bad, not just for mankind, but for the rest of the environment as well, so I refuse to use.

Look, if you get ONE burn a year, & then use sens in the sun, you'll be just fine, unless you're an albino. If you are, you should prolly take the D supplements. Regular folk will do well to get a healthy dose of sun on a regular basis, & ignore the scare tactics of the health & beauty conglomerates, cuz they'll kill you faster than nature ever would, in this area, I'm so sure. Do try to remember that they are more interested in selling you their sh*t than they are in your actual health or beauty.

Now...that being said...I'm still burning, but I'm starting to peel at the shoulders. Yeah...I was a stupid idjit this time, but hell, it happens. I'll get over it, cuz I was DESIGNED to, & I don't do stupid stuff like that often.

bob - white tee-shirts are the preferred for sun protection, btw. Yes, you can get a real burn through almost any shirt, too. The darker the color, the more light is absorbed by the fabric. (You'd think the light would stay in the fabric, though!)

Oh! & yes, Zip, I said "Cripes!" I remember that track.
