How about this song Phillip?
(Ignore unrelated video - though it's well done so you don't have to)

Ifn ya don't want to hear the whole thing, skip to the 4:04 mark and let it rip.
If the player will let you.

He loses me with the wandering moaning, starting around 5:30.

I'm not a huge fan of this vocal tone, but this is just how this guy sounds. He's doing as well as he can with what he's got. For the most part, it isn't offensive at all. When he reaches up for those high notes, he does it with a bit o' panache, but he tends to slide a bit, too, which is yet another modern approach that sounds lazy, but isn't, really.

I've never been an AS fan, but they do okay, I guess.

Once again, though - it's a tone & a range that could blend with so many other bands that it loses its unique quality. This guy could sing the OP's choice just as well as the original, & I doubt that many ppl would know the dif, although he sounds more like Pearl Jam, to me, overall.

Well, do you have a vocalist from the last ten to fifteen years that you really like?

I liked that 30 Seconds to Mars' singer, & Chevelle's singer was pretty good, too.

Toad The Wet Sprocket had a good one, too.

Live's singer was truly awesome. Too bad about their material. He was just as good live as in the studio, though. Amazing range & control. I wouldn't feel cheesy comparing him to a David Byron, even.

Yeah, there aren't many new singers I've heard that grab me.

I thought the Live singer was good, but he never 'grabbed' me as he did to you.
Maybe because I didn't really pay attention to their material in any committed way.

Yep. Like I said - it's too bad about their material. Most of it wasn't very good.

But my goodness that man could sing! Deep lows through unscreeching highs. He was truly amazing.

If he had Peter Gabriel writing for him, he'd have been known by everyone.

In this one, he does a touch of that scale warbling at one very short point, instead of showcasing it like the r & b'ers do in all their songs.

He has great power & projection when it's called for, yet his dynamics are unbelievable!

When I saw them, I was just blown away by his voice. Their schtick is that everything you hear on stage is played, live, thus their name. But when he sang those lows, & then stretched out so high, well, I was impressed, to say the least. Every note he can sing in the studio, he sang live, & may have even stretched it all a bit farther, even. Prolly cuz I saw him near to his home town, & he was happy playing for ppl he knew.

I also like some of the Counting Crows' stuff, Zip, though some of it I find way irritating, too (Mr Jones!).

But, the best singer to have come out since Peter Gabriel, imho, is this guy -

Cover THAT, folks!

Funkdealer: If you are better than this, then you should get a hold of me. I need a good bass player and a good singer for this project. Shawn and I are already writing new material and our new drummer is amazing. Dude has been playing professionally since he was 12 and he's mid-20's now. BTW...depending where you're at in Cleveland, it's only an hour or so from here. Might be interesting...

Haha, I thought there was too much of an improvement in the singers ability on this second link. So I found the same song, only live.

Gotta love Pro Tools.

Thanks for the offer MetalD, but I got my hands full. I am already a member of Uptight Sugar, Sonic Burn, Led Neptune and JD'eM.

My band covered a Default song; loved playing it. I'm not a huge fan of the guy's vocals though. He can sing - and I'd kill to sing that well - but I just don't dig his voice. It sounds too country to me.

As for Live - we covered "Lightning Crashes". I actually always loved our version better, but only because of my singer. That was one of her best songs for us. God I love hearing her sing that song...

'sounds like a country singer doing modern rock'

That's the description I was looking for GT! That's it exactly!

Are you talking about the Crash Test Dummies guy? He has that folky tone in his voice, for sure, & I was, of course, being facetious when I said he was the best. Still, I like him. He has a very masculine sound that many bands are lacking, & a lot of natural power in his voice, yet he also has a fairly good range, considering his deep tones.

edit - oops!

Default's singer is countryish, eh? I can see that, too. (I wish I could sing sitting down.) He has a great range, you gotta admit. Good power & projection, too. Good control. (He should use the baby in the background all the time!) Not a fave, by any means, but I'll admit he's very good. And no, it doesn't bother me that he has a country sound while he sings rock, either. That makes the band unique.
