Without having any documentation for your amplifiers, I would assume the reasoning of having 4 and 16 ohms settings only was in assuming you would only be using their cabinets.

IS your amplifier really a dual power amp model, or do they refer to dual outputs from a mono source to be "stereo" just because you use two speakers? If so that isn't really stereo, it is mono with left and right speakers.

If it says 8 ohms left and 8 ohms right, that is really 4 ohms when both cabinets are plugged in. The outputs would be paralleled within the amplifier.

If you plug one speaker into only one of the 8 ohm outputs, and if it works, then you do have an 8 ohm output on the amplifier. If neither of the 8 ohm outputs work with only one speaker plugged into the 8 ohm output, the amplifier is internally rewiring them in series, which would be seen as 16 ohms at the amplifier output.

Clear as mud yet? :)

Krul: Remember that we both have the same head, so being that what it is...the amp should be set to 8 ohms if you're just running one 4 x 12 cab. When you add the second 4 x 12 cab, then it should be at 4 ohms. It's NOT a stereo head, so the whole stereo thing is out the window here.

BTW...I kind of put my 6505+ aside because I just picked up a Laney solid state (yeah I said solid state) head that blows the Peavey away as far as ballsy distortion and the clean channel was compared to a Fender clean by my friend. Yeah Laney's are expensive (but a lot less than the Peavey since it's solid state) and are almost impossible to get here in the states, but they're really that good. Not as much saturation for leads, but that just makes you play the lead that much better (meaning that you have to nail it rather than using the saturation to cover up "boo-boos").

Clear as mud can be slacker! It appears I was doing the right thing the whole time... right amp setting, right input. I was just concerned about the math. I didn't want to fry my amp since solid state amps were all I was familiar with.

Metal D, we must be tone twins, because I've been fantasizing about getting a Laney for a couple years now. I almost bought an old beat up one on Ebay(solid state) instead of getting the 6505+. But I figured I might as well splurge on a tube head. Now, I'm thinking about getting either a Laney or a Diezel amp in the future. I'm sure I will choose the Laney though. :)

Sans, thanks for being patient and answering my questions, as well as all you guys here. Everyone at least appeared unirritated.

^^ Yeah more info would be great.

The best amp that I ever played would be the Laney VH100.

Metal D, How much was it if you dont mind me asking.

Yeah Metal D, how much? I just went to Ebay and the most expensive new Laney tube heads were cheaper than the Peavey's($1000,-1100)! Solid State head is $200!

I've never gotten a boner and kicked myself in the ass at the same time...until now. If I wasn't so damn broke I'd buy one. I will by the end of this year.

Holy crap!!! That's the one, but I paid $450 for it from a store in the UK. That one makes me wonder though. I've never bought anything off from e-bay that didn't have some issues with it and for it to say that there's no reserve, but not have a buy it now going on is a little fishy. For that price though...I may buy it just to see since I just sold 2 of my old Crate rigs.

The other thing that makes me wonder about it is that there's no dealers for them in the US. Certain places seem to get some, but they're not authorized dealers, so the warranty won't be any good. There's official warranty papers in the box and it states that you have to name the "authorized dealer" for the warranty to be acknowledged.

The dealer that I dealt with also said that the cabs for that head aren't all that great, so he recommended that I just use the 6505+ cab. Although I'm looking at a B-52 4 x 12 loaded with Vintage 30 Celestions which would fit my sound even better than the Peavey cab. My bro Shawn has a Crate Blue Voodoo from the mid-90's and I have the matching cab for it, so he's buying that and I'll get the Vintage 30 cab.

I still haven't even hooked my rack unit up to the head yet. I can't imagine what the EQ, BBE, and compressor will make it sound like  .

EDIT: I forgot to add that I already took the "Laney" logo off from the front of the amp head. Just as I took the "Peavey" logos off from the cab. LOL! Shawn did that as well on his Crate stuff. People love our sound, so we keep 'em guessin' what we're using. The only reason that I share anything with you guys, is because you're all cool and it seems that everyone helps everyone else around here...

I had a Laney back in my 'searching for alternatives to Marshall' days. As I recall, it was a pretty good amp for solid state but the circuit board cracked and had to be repaired. I gave it to my son and went back to Marshall.
