Okay...

#1 ) Who, in your opinion, are the most versatile performers, playing many genres?

#2) Who plays the most instruments in modern music? (Plays them WELL!)

1) most versatile performer: I'm going to vote for my fiance. She rocks...

2) I'm going to go with Imogen Heap. That girl plays EVERYTHING... and I think she's a brilliant composer too.

Bowie played all of the instruments on "Diamond Dogs".

Todd Rundgren is similarly talented. He did everything on "Todd" and "A Wizard, A True Star".

Dan Fogelberg was an amazing talent on both guitars and keyboards, as well as writing some of the best lyrics. RIP

John Paul Jones.
He can play any instrument in the rock genre.
He can even rock a mandolin.

Ok, most Versatile IMO, would have to be someone like Lenny Kravitz or believe it or not Kid Rock, both of which can play everything on the stage as well or better than their backing band, I'm not big on their music, but I have seen both live, and I was very suprised with their skill and versatility. Now, I took these two, because I figure, the obvious would be named along with the super obscure, so this is kind of an in-between answer. lol

Once again I'm left with no clue.
Was a day I could call by name every member of every band I liked and their musical genealogy as well.
Today I'm lucky to get the names right in my own band.

When I hear new music I like I don't hardly even listen for the name of the band.
Just like a duck I wake up in a new world every morning.

Kravitz, Charlie Daniels, Barbara Mandrel, Hank Jr, Dave Grohl. All 5 either walk around the stage playing everything or record entire albums by themselves. Of course now I'm tooting my own horn but I play bass, guitar, piano, and drums on stage and in the studio. And I cover more Genres than anybody I know. I try not to pat myself on the back. This question however addresses me specifically. Rap, rock, pop, spoken word, a capella country, a capella funk pop, funk rock instrumental, do wop, etc etc etc. I cover all those genres in a single live show.

KUDOS zip for mentioning John Paul Jones. Now for my mention, Wayne Newton. He plays 11 instruments by ear.

Since no one has mentioned him yet...I'm goin' with Tom Scholz from the band Boston. I believe he wrote and recorded the whole first album by himself.

Nope, he produced and played guitar. Brad Delp sang RIP.

Joe Walsh is another virtuoso. Equally at home on guitar or keys, as well as a cool vocalist and writer. Plays a mean slide, up there with Duane Allman and Johnny Winter.

most versatile in genre - Peter Gabriel, Trey Anastasio, Bela Fleck, Sam Bush

most instruments used on stage - David Lindley - he was Jackson Brown's guitarist, but Brown never knew what he was gonna use to play a lead. It might be a guitar, or a banjo, or a pedal steel, or...
