I play with my fingers , pick and a bow (string bass). I still play four string too/ when I master that Ill move on the 5 strings. And Ive been playing bass for over 30 years. So maybe in 30 years Ill learn 5 strings!

You've received a lot of good advice so far. I just want to add an anecdote from my own past:

I was in a band. We started to feel like the drummer wasn't up to snuff. He was a nice guy, but it seemed like his timekeeping wandered a bit. Nobody noticed but us. We fired him. Then started looking for a new drummer. We never found one that fit. The band broke up.

Now, the band breaking up was partly due to other factors, but firing that drummer when we did meant we didn't get to play out or enjoy the experience of being in a band.

I'm not saying you shouldn't replace your bass player. Just be very, very sure it's the Right Thing To Do.

You could always email the link to this thread to him and ask him what he thinks about the whole thing.

Hey all
We have a guy that plays bass in our band, he says he has played in other bands for many years, he is a really nice person who i consider my friend but he is not a very good bass player and kinda throws off the rest of the guys in the band, he's not really in sync with us. We dont want to lose him as a friend but he does suck as a bass player any suggestions?

You should tape a video of your band playin' at a practice. Post it here so we all can make a better judgement instead of taking YOUR word for it.
