Since The Farleys are on hiatus, I auditioned for a local cover band called Nowhere Fast (www.nowherefastrocks.com) a couple of weeks ago. They called me the next day and said I had the job. I normally wouldn't have accepted except they have pretty good vocals which is a must for doing covers. Here's the songs we've rehearsed so far:

1) Walkin' The Dog – Aerosmith
2) Hard To Handle – Black Crowes
3) War Pigs – Black Sabbath
4) Stone Free – Jimi Hendrix
5) Rock Candy – Montrose
6) Gimme Three Steps – Lynyrd Skynyrd
7) My Own Worst Enemy - Lit
8) You Shook Me All Night Long – AC/DC
9) Rock Steady – Bad Co
10) Hair of the Dog – Nazareth
11) Roadhouse Blues – The Doors
12) Immigrant Song – Led Zeppelin
13) Piece Of My Heart – Big Brother & The Holding Company
14) 30 Days in the Hole – Humble Pie
15) Crazy Bitch – Buckcherry
16) Only One – Melissa Ethridge
17) Killing In The Name Of – Rage Against The Machine
18) Communication Breakdown – Led Zeppelin
19) Bodies – Drowning Pool
20) Just What The Doctor Ordered – Ted Nugent
21) Figured You Out – Nickleback
22) Life Is Beautiful – Sixx A.M.

Our first show is a week from tomorrow, a private party. I'm going to Guitar Center tonight to trade in my Martin D-28 and get a new Deluxe Strat. I need at least four guitars since they do some alternate tunings.

Hey, jimmy, that's way cool!

Too bad about your D28, though.

Do you charge more for private parties than you do in bars? I do, as a rule.

You need a whammy to do Killing In The Name, lol

Good Luck Jimmy, we play almost all those songs. Let us know how it goes.

Keep Rockin

Thanks Phil & John. The other guitar player has the Whammy pedal for the leads in "Killing". He lost half of his index finger on his left hand in a work accident but he still does pretty good. They liked me because I actually play the leads fairly close to the recording. The singer does a pretty good Janis Joplin, I never played "Piece of My Heart" in a band before.

Yeah too bad about the D-28, it's a 1976 and at one time I could have gotten $4000 for it when Martin was on strike. I'll be lucky if Guitar Center will give me $1000.

Thanks. Actually they have some video on their website, without me of course. This is just something to do until I get The Farleys rolling again but they seem to be OK people. They had the band going pretty well (check out www.nowherefastrocks.com for the shows they did last year) until the drummer committed suicide. Then they found a new drummer and the lead guitarist quit. Ah the joyful life of a musician.

Are you doing 4 different tunings in one set?
If the answer is yes, then re organize the set list. You dont need 4 guitars.
If the answer is no, then you dont need four guitars.

Yeah Zip, I would reorganize the sets if it was my band but I'm just a hired gun. Plus I hate wasting my break tuning guitars!

I picked up my new Strat last night, it's an 09 Deluxe with a maple neck. The electronics and hardware are all upgraded compared to the Standard model, which was $500 less.

They had a Les Paul robot there, the prices have come way down (it was around $850). But I already have two Les Pauls and I wanted another Strat.

Congrats Jim!!! You'll have some fun with that one, I'm sure.

I agree with ya on the 4 guitars thing, but having a trem like the Floyd Rose Speedloader can be just as easy to change your tuning as a fixed bridge guitar. Believe me...I have 2 guitars with that system on them. You can block the trem where ever you want so you can just tune as if it were a fixed bridge, but still have the drop action of the trem. Or you can just leave it at full-float if you're staying in one tuning.

Good luck and most importantly...Have fun!!! :)

Thanks D. I have a Kahler Spyder tremelo on my 72 Strat with a locking nut, but it still takes a good ten minutes to change tuning, which could be spent drinking beer.

How on earth can you say you they have a good singer, listen to this:

You will make them better, but, quit the band!!!!!!

Meh, I never said she was great Sean, she has to cover a lot of male vocal songs that she probably shouldn't. I suggested some female vocal songs that might suit her better like Pat Benatar and Blondie but again it's not my band, it's just something to do. But thanks for pointing that out.
