When I was five my favorite songs were from the Beach Boys. I was living in California at the time and was fascinated by surfing so the Beach Boys were it for me...

It was 1960, I lived in Balto, MD, & my father was into Spike jones & Glen Miller & Homer & Jethro & Peggy Lee...so of course that's all I had to listen to...until I got my 1st lil Japanese transistor radio!

Speakin' of Homer & Jethro, I still think they're pretty damned good...

When I was five, I loved "Hit the Road Jack" by Ray Charles. I loved that song so much that I got up the nerve to sing it in kindergarten clas. I sung is very softly though, because I didn't want anyone to hear me My kindergarten teacher made me restart the song and I had to sing it louder. Well, I restarted the song but did not sing any louder Mrs. Stover then told me if I didn't sing it louder that I would have to sit down. Well, as most of you probably guessed...I sat right down.

Then later on Glen Miller, Ted Heath, the Dorseys. Naturally all the "Hit Parade" stuff and variety show artists of the day. (Nothing else to listen to)

Then came the beginning of rock and roll. {Rock a billy) Elvis, Little Richard, Fats, and on and on.

Along with all the instrumental guys, Duane Eddy, The Ventures, and all the other one hit wonders of the day.

Then Gentle Giant, Passport, Miles Davis, Calvin Keys, Weather Report, and on and on.

I like pretty much like everything that good musicians play. I have even bought crap just because a good picker smoked on a ride in an otherwise horrid album.

But Peter and the Wolf was a treat to listen to.

Even though the Edison Victrola would crank down and had to be rewound.

Now how many of you remember those days?

I barely remember being five.

Oh man! I LOVED "Peter & The Wolf," SG! I think I was a little older by the time I heard that, though.

"Hit The Road, Jack" was another fave of my early youth, Mary!

Aaaaghhh, Peter and the Wolf!?!?!?!? We just got too much in common. We had the album set. I wonder if it is still at home? It seems like I just seen it recently. I love Peter and the Wolf. That may have been quite a significant piece in my life that influenced my decidion to go into music. I will be attending a workshop that will feature this guy. I hafta find it and I will post it here.

Flute ain't just a girl's instrument!!!

A friend of mine went to the library and checked out the "Peter and the Wolf" CD for me to copy. Now I have it somewhere in my files. The library is an easy place to find it. After all those years it still sounds great.

I wanted to play the clarinet at one time but they wouldn't let me take music in the public fool system. They said I was tone deaf. I wish the F*&^%ng moron that kept me out of music classes could hear me play guitar. Especially when I would tell him that I play by ear.

Thats not easy either. Ever try to fret a guitar with your ears?

What a shame. She robbed me of a chance to become an unsuccessful clarinet player.

I taught music to deaf children. I made them instruments so that they could learn to play "standards" like Twinkle Twinkle Littel Star and THree Blind Mice. I also had a deaf flute student and I sent her to competition.. Ohio has a hearing impaired marching band who marched in the Rose Bowl Parade this year. I would not discourage anyone from playing an instrument or learning music.I don't understand anyone who would.
