Bret Michaels Hospitalized Following Brain Hemorrhage: Report
Ex-Poison Frontman, Reality TV Star Reportedly in Critical Condition

Over the course of a few days, Bret Michaels went from rocking reality TV to reeling from health problems.

(John Lamparski/WireImage)The ex-Poison frontman, former star of VH1's "Rock of Love With Bret Michaels," and current "Celebrity Apprentice" contestant was hospitalized at an undisclosed facility Thursday after suffering a massive subarachnoid hemorrhage, or bleeding at the base of his brain stem, according to People magazine.

Michaels, 47, was in critical condition and under "intense observation" by doctors while they run tests to determine the cause of his bleeding, People reported.

ABCNews.com's calls and e-mails to Michaels' publicist were not immediately returned.

Last weekend, Michaels revealed to his fans that he was rushed to a hospital on April 11 for an emergency appendectomy.

"They told me that if I had gone onstage like I wanted to, [my appendix] likely would have ruptured and I could have died," he wrote on his blog.

Michaels was scheduled to perform in San Antonio, Texas that night.

"I'm feeling pretty bad ... to tell you the truth," Michaels wrote after the appendectomy. "When you're not planning on having a body part ripped out of you, it can be a shock to the system. While the doctors are amazing in San Antonio, there is just no way around the fact that getting your appendix out HURTS. I have a pretty good threshold for pain, but this one hurts."

The rocker added that because he's been a diabetic since age 6, his recovery could take longer than usual. However, it's unlikely that Michaels' diabetes spurred his current condition.

"This [type of hemorrhage] is usually from an anueursym," Dr. Wendy Wright, an assistant professor of neurology and neurosurgery at Emory University Hospital in Atlanta, told ABCNews.com. "The risk of an aneurysm rupturing is probably related to size -- the larger the aneurysm, the more likely to rupture -- and also may be more likely in people who smoke or on blood thinning medications."

A factor that could have played into Michaels' current condition is his past history of drug use. Michaels hasn't been shy about his hard-partying, rock and roll past. In a 2003 interview with VH1, he described a "menage a mess" from his Poison days, saying, "It was the drugs, the booze, doing the lines off [exotic dancers]."

"Being a drug user, in particular a user of injectable drugs, can damage heart valves and predispose you to get endocarditis," said Dr. Richard Bernstein, a neurologist at Northwestern Memorial Hospital.

Endocarditis involves infection at one of the heart's valves.

Bernstein added: "Cocaine use in and of itself can be a major cause of intracerebral hemorrhage."

My wife will be devastated.

Me, I don't wish the guy any ill will, but it seems inevitable.

I hope he recovers, though. I'm not actually a fan, but he seems like a decent guy to me.

Hmm, well he did take an Él Kabong to the melon when that big set piece came down on him at the Tony awards last year. That may, or may not have had something to do with this.

yeah probably an indirect result from getting hit in the head.

I was never a fan of his music or his TV show, but I don't hate him...

Hope he pulls through.

I hope they DON'T make it into a reality show.

It's funny that you guys mentioned this. I just checked my Myspace and saw that my buddy Fred (lead player from the band Nefarious) had something funny as his status. It was something like..."Please don't die Bret Michaels because if you do, then we'll all have to be tortured by your songs on the radio and have to see more lame-ass reality shows."

How coincidental...

Poor Brett, he had a semi-ok band if you like that stuff and now he's all over, no clue like a leaf in a tornado and he gets hit in the head.

Only thing worse than him kickin' off would be him in a semi-intelligent state.

I hate to see any fellow musician go thru what hes going thru, whether I liked his music doesnt matter. In fact most of us on here if we had a chance could learn an awful lot from this guy, cause he has been there and done that and is still doing it in a big way.

Get well soon Brett!

Bret Michaels expected to make full recovery thanks to 'will to live,' says singer's doctor

Bret Michaels' "will to live" may have saved his life.

The Poison front man will most likely make a full recovery, according to his doctor, and it's all thanks to the 47-year-old’s “undeniable” will to overcome the brain hemorrhage he suffered last week.

"He has an unbelievable fight in him and told me what kept him alive at the moment of the hemorrhage was that he "did not want his family to wake up and see him lying unconscious in the middle of the floor," ' Dr. Joseph Zabramski said in a statement released Friday by Michaels’ publicist.

"It was a combination of Bret’s fight to stay conscious during the hemorrhage and get to the emergency room, and the immediate medical attention provided by our staff at Barrow that enabled us to stabilize his condition.”

The chief of cerebrovascular surgery at the Barrow Neurological Institute at St. Joseph's Hospital and Medical Center in Phoenix, Ariz., Zabramski has been treating Michaels’ subarachnoid hemmorhage since he entered the hospital April 22.

Zabramski says that his team will continue testing the “Celebrity Apprentice” star after hitting some “roadblocks.” These include hyponatremia, cranial and back pain from blood drainage, Michael’s appendectomy on April 12 and the reality star’s history of Type 1 diabetes.

Michaels' neurological team will hold a press conference at noon Tuesday to discuss his prognosis in more detail.

The rocker’s medical team had previously stated that Michaels could start touring as early as May and that he may appear on the live finale of "Celebrity Apprentice" on May 23.
