How can a private school operate on $6000 per student and the public schools can't operate on less than $15000 a year per student. [L.I. ny]
How can a private company send out 2 guys to fill in pot holes in the road and the govt needs 4 guys at 5 times the cost.
How come average govt salaries and benifits run 30% more than private sector jobs.

Craig I need an answer here.

Glen,

This isn't an attack or anything, just a response relating my personal experiences in an attempt to answer your question.

When you work for the private sector, you are among the "working poor". And when you get paid jack-crap, and they send you out to do a job that needs 5 people, and you only have two (doing the jobs of 2-3 people), you tend to be demotivated and do a really crappy job, which is why those pot-holes keep coming back two months later.

I haven't made a 'middle-class' wage since 1999. I've lost of 30% of my salary in the last 10 years, for doing the same thing. Cost of living here has gone up over 25% in the same time. I make just enough that I don't qualify for any assistance, yet, doctor visits, gas, and phone service is in my "discretionary spending"

Why is simple - ever since the dot com crash, companies (any and all) learned a valuable trick.. they can get rid of all the high-paid 'talent', scrap benefits like xmas bonuses, performance bonuses, drop good medical benefits for expensive (to the employee) crap that has extreme co-pays and limited coverage, and force remaining employees to "pick up the slack" instead of hiring replacements for those who are let go, and many who quit. They see it as "increasing productivity", and then have the audacity to act surprised when morale goes into the toilet and the quality of the product goes with it. That's not even considering that many of them send jobs overseas...

I'm not saying gov't guys do a sterling job in all cases, but certainly the percentage of road work done by gov't is better than private- if you don't think so, come to my house... my road has been torn to hell by private companies (water co mostly and it's private here).

Thankyou for being so civil.
Believe me I have seen the sh*t you and so many talented people like you get put through.

Before I can blame greedy corps and say fire them,,,, I really think we have to look at big expensive govt that even phil agreed ,wastes much time and energy passing costly redundant laws.

Further more the taxes that are generated from corps just get wasted by big govt.
That translates to money they can't afford to pay good employees.

Big entitlment spending, big waste ,and big govt in general are the real problem.
Look at the states that are borderline bankrupt,NJ,NY, CA, and MASS and CONECTICUT.

Big govt, big taxes, and people voting with their feet.

TEXAS IS LOOKING PRETTY GOOD.

It is not business that screwing you Kramer, Its our govt.

The trickle down theory works real well when it is reversed and all the taxes upon taxes upon taxes are not counted in the consumer price index and your pay does not reflect any inflation at all .

I feel bad when I hear stuff like this and I wish people would say ,NO MORE.
Funny the new gov of NJ just asked the teachers union to take a one year pay freeze,,,,ONE YEAR, He received a slightly hidden death threat for his efforts to control govt spending. These teachers don't care about you or anyone else.[And they are teaching our kids]
It is ok for you to suffer but not them. They are part of the larger problem of govt spending out of control.

Next time you see a 70 grand a year govt employee, one that has a better pension plan than any private corp could offer, better health plans than any of us can afford. Go ask them where you can get an application and how it feels to live the American dream. I'm gonna, you make better time swimming with the river[till it drys up]

Oh, they "operate" all right. I think the better question, is... "Why do private schools OUTPERFORM public schools, and why do even CHARTER SCHOOLS, outperform Public schools, which are better financed."

The Charter Schools are the powerful comparison, because these schools "ARE" public schools, which are federally financed, but they have more autonomy on how they run their schools, and they are PROHIBITED from charging tuition. Charter Schools regularly outperform Public Schools in almost every respect. Students score better on testing, These schools have long waiting lists, etc...

Why?

Because the parents and students have CHOICE rather than a government controlled MONOPOLY. Remember the evil "Free Market" that Phil is just sure, will kill and enslave us all? Well, in EDUCATION, it LIBERATES! In traditional public schools, THERE IS NO CHOICE. You MUCT go to school where the government TELLS YOU to go to school. There is no closing that school if it has poor performance. There are no firing teachers, who suck as teachers, because of teacher's unions.

A Charter School though?

They receive a charter from 3 to 5 years, with a contract they must live up to. If they don't succeed, they lose federal funding. The school will be closed down!

Free Market Motivation!

Traditional Public schools? Virtually a job for life, no matter your performance, as long as you don't commit a major crime. But crime among students is higher in these places, and violence is more prevalent and scores are almost always LOWER in these schools.

I'll answer this one, with a homework requirement...

Next time you drive by a government road project. See if 7 times out of 10, you don't see 2 guys working, and 10 guys standing around WATCHING the other 2 work.

Now that's the smartest thing I ever heard so far.

NJ is ready to eat itself.

People are getting ready to revolt because the govt. is so busy helping the local corps, the people are literally dying in the aisles.

And the thinly veiled death threats are not thinly veiled round here..

These people mean business!

The worst is a local company just got busted for releasing acetone into the air. They claim that the town said "it was ok".

Worst part is a daycare is physically not more than 500 yards away and when you drive on Royal Rd. on a hot day, you can still smell the acetone they are releasing into the air.

Can you say "Carcinogen"?

(f u Craig) lol Some say your cigarette is really an air filter and you smokers live longer if you don't smoke the major brands.

Well, you know I've been a non-smoker for over a month now.

I can't use my favorite smoker joke now...

I say: "I didn't want to start smoking, but the government gave me NO CHOICE!"

People then ask... "What the hell are you talking about?"

And I respond... "Ever since I learned that second hand smoke is more dangerous than first hand smoke... I had to start smoking! I thought... Well, give me the first hand stuff then... Cause I don't want to die before I have to!"

"So those bastards in the government made me start smoking!"

Did my homework Craig and I could only come up with three answers..
1. there wasn't enough money in the budget [10 grand] to buy a few more shovels.
or
2. those other workers were not "senior " enough to give them their own shovels to lean on.
or
3. it was a training program on the proper use of a shovel[outside of gang activities] and everyone gets overtime. :)
