Folks, the open mic last nitgh was invaded by old, & I DO mean OLD country styles & folks!

There's something about the slow stuff combined with the pedal steel that can put me out super quick! It's like the pedal steel hits ya like slipping into a really comfy hammock, after awhile.

The night started off with the solo mandolin player that really sucks, frankly, but we try to encourage him.

Then the guy who does all pretty stuff. Pedal steel sat in at the end.

An old cpl in thier 70's followed, doing folky-country stuff from the '40's with those real nasally voices.

Then an entire band, playing Patsy Cline & other old stuff - all slow, with the pedal steel.

Next, a trio concentrating on George Jones, & by then I was nodding on the bar. One of the guitars was playe like a dobro, with the vol pedal, so it hit ya like a pedal steel...yawn...

A friend of mine got up last, but I was so sleepy I left. Hope it didn't piss him off.

I never even got to play. *sniff*

Well Phil, that sucks, hope next time is better for ya.. I have 2 acoustic jams to go to this week, The first one tonight is new, never played there before, so im kinda nervous, and the second is one i've been going to since it opened.. A know quantity, lol. Ya need to get on that playlist early enough to get ahead of the sleepy stuff, that way you won't nod off... maybe, lol.

It works both ways here.

Thursday night jam.... young rockers repeatedly playing boring scales through stacks ... as loud as they can get. Nothing making any sense musically, but everyone on the bandstand boogies to the noise as if they are real playing something.

I have to admit, the guitar faces are pretty good, although they aren't legit. (Saving grace for spectators looking to be entertained.) Oh yeah, the cool white boy spazz dancing that grunge musicians do when they're really getting into it.

On the other hand:

There is also a country jam on Friday nights around here. About 4-5 rhythm players that all keep playing without knowing chord change #1, a drummer who grooves to his own beat, steel guitar players that are the envy of any ally cat seeking to mate, and singers who are oblivious to timing or pitch. (Rather like my vocals)

No positive attributes or saving grace whatsoever.

It certainly does go both ways.

I went to one with an old friend a few weeks ago. I got up and played and they wouldnt let me sit down or leave. They thought I was brilliant, but the truth is everyone who got up played the same 3 chords, everything was in G so I got a good workout in G. Hopefully if I go back again we will change keys!

Ah, sanshouheil,

So you've taken notice also. Where you really see them shine is on the late late talk shows. The bass man usually looks as if he is stomping cockroaches in slow motion, the lead player is doing something looking like uncoordinated squats, or looking like he has to pee really bad, while the singer does a really clumsy Michel Jackson step that looks as if his feet are attacking him and trying to make him fall down.

But it is entertaining to a some degree.

I always wonder why those big cities don't have really good bands that would kill to be on nation wide TV.
