I've noticed over and over again (and over again) that theres some weird connection between martial arts, computers, and music.
How many musos do you know of that have an interest in, and engage in, 2 out of the 3, or all of the three.
Especially music and computers it seems like.

On the surface these different interests have nothing to do with each other, so what gives?

I think that the music and computer connection is a direct result of technology. It's soooooooooo much easier for us musicians to use computers to record and such, and as a result, we developed an interest in the computer beyond just the recording programs. As musicians, we like to know how things work, and we also like to "hot-rod" things (for lack of a better term).

As far as the martial arts thing goes...I only know a few people that are into all three.

It was the fashion to have children tested for IQ and aptitude when I was little. The shrinks noted that I was good at undoing knots and solving puzzles and predicted that I would be good at computer programming. My father steered me that way even though I wanted to be a writer and musician. Music involves similar disciplines (problem solving) so they are complimentary. Not sure about the martial arts, although I'm good at kicking myself in the as$ occasionally.

There is a correlation between intelligence and creativity. Einstein played violin -WHILE- imagining his theory of relativity. Musicians generally have a head for mathematics as well. Scales, harmonies, transposing, instrument tunings... all mathematical.

Computing requires problem solving skills and IMAGINATION! You are using math, and... you are CREATING something from your imagination.

It is quite natural, that people who have a propoensity toward being musicians, could also have an interest in, or excell in, computer sciences as well!

Yeah, well I love to dabble in programming but I suck at math

But you probably have the APTITUDE for it.

Math bores me personally. I had to force myself to study it at all.

Music increases spatial thinking in young students who are taught the musical arts. I suppose that would lend itself to martial arts, since you hafta be so very aware of your space. I thought about 'puters, & went to school for it a bit, but ended up sticking to the construction arts. I've designed & built quite a few things. When I get around to it, I'll post some pics for ya. Again, though, this involves spacial thinking (as opposed to "spay-shul" thinking! heh heh heh).

Lately, I've become more interested in photography, & I've learned that I really suck at it. But I'm trying...taking lotsa pictures...& every once in awhile I get a lil gem.

Would someone pih-LEEZE teach me how to use that damned photo bucket thingie? Damn but I feel like a twit when it comes to understanding directions from the sites!

most heroin addicts that I've met (many) seem to be above average intelligence. give a great song & dance. and fight for escape from their addiction. sold their computer for a fix...
is there a collation here?

I majored in Biomedical Electronic Engineering Technology, and Computer Systems Technology, in College.
I have 2 Black Belts.
I've recorded over 100 songs, copyrighted over 50 of them . . .
.
So - maybe there IS something to it.
.
I suspect the results of this (or - maybe the cause) is a very thick Corpus Callosum . . .
That's the connection between the Right and Left brains.
.
I've heard estimates that this connection between our logical halves and emotionl halves average about 300,000 Dendrites/Axons (Outputs/Inputs to individual Neurons (brain cells)).
Everyone is different - some folks have less, some have more . . .
.
I suspect that some folks have a greater flow of infrormation between these halves.
Also, some folks have a lot more Glial cells in the brain, which might allow a greater aptitude for this cross transference . . .
The brain has more Glia cells than Neurons.
Although smaller than Neurons, Glia cells outnumber Neurons by approximately 7 to one.
And the Glial cells make up about 40% of the mass of our brains.
.
Einstein had a greater percentage of Glial cells than the common man . . .
.
That's my 2 cents worth . . .
. . . dunno . . .

I've noticed that many of my fellow pilots are also musicians, to varying degrees, are techno-oriented, many are quite good at martial arts or just good physical conditioning (Need to be in decent shape to pass the class 3 physical) and are a vast cross-section of the population, but in most cases, problem-solving is the top aptitude in them. Computers, graphics design, doctors, the list goes on. Look at how many actors are also pilots. Both sides of the brain are working a little higher.. Creativity working in conjunction with the logical.. And then there are the ones that are dumber than a fence post, and shouldn't be out in public unsupervised!

I'd had a couple of those in school, millions of years ago, lol. I had a high as in off the chart mechanical aptitude, but when it came to business stuff, or whatever they called office type work back then.. i sucked.. I wasnt dumb, just uninterested.. who cares about spreadsheets and making change.. i have an engine i wanna rebuild! lol.

Interesting...I never thought about this, but I guess it fits.

I've been a computer repair technician for 12 years, one of the best in this area, built at least a hundred computers, including every one I've ever owned, except the first one.

Over the years I've been sparring partner for two martial arts experts, one a black belt, the other an instructor. No, 3, also my brother when he was a beginner. Although I have virtually no training, I was pretty good at it. The first one loved it because I was the only one he could find who could actually land a punch now and then. we pretty much beat the crap out of each other even though neither was trying to, but enjoyed it. He landed a kick one day to my chin that knocked me down...by accident... I leaned a bit just at the right time and POW...yeah it hurt, but we laughed it off and went right back to kicking the crap out of each other.

The instructor was a bit different, he had a bookshelf full of trophies, some from Thailand, dating back to 1963, (this was in Houston about 1990-1992). He would hand me a pair of practice pads and boy am I glad...if he had ever actually hit me I would have been in intensive care...hopefully George would have been on duty. :D It was crazy, but we usually went to Hermann Park, bad place to be after dark...First time he stopped there I asked him if he was crazy...he said who's going to mess with me??? Oh...ok...the guy was bad to the bone, but a great friend.

Oh and did I mention I'm also a guitar player?

I kinda fell into the Kung Fu by accident.
I just went to take some classes for exercise and maybe pick up some stuff. But the challenge caught me first then it became an obsession to get better.
I was a poor student whom learned slow and the hard way.
But I learned until it became instinctive.
I had played bass guitar as a youth some. And always loved music. But it was Ray asking me to play music with him in 95 that got me serious about it.
After I closed my Kwoon due to rotator cuff tears Guitar became my Kung Fu.
As far as computers ... Not really interested.
