Religion has been at war with science forever particularly the Catholics, during the Renaissance discoveries had to kept secret if not scientist would suffer the wrath of the Inquisition one example was Galileo who confirmed through his invention of the Telescope Copernicus Helios center theory (Helios=Sun) IE he placed the Sun at the center of our solar system, for his effort Galileo was tried where he was compelled by the priests to renege what he knew and proved to be the truth to safe his life, Galileo was sentenced to the "Ergastolo" (Life imprisonment) by the inquisition he died in prison (house arrest)
The Vatican pardoned him 400 hundred year later and this is one example of what religious zealots have done over the centuries to stifle science in order to keep the Status quo with the Pope in control of people ‘minds.
Thanks to Guttenberg and his invention of the printing press books were printed faster than the Vatican could stop them, one of the books written in Spain titled “the black book” was particularly thorny to the priests, they tried to stop the dissemination of these information to no avail, dozens of such cases occurred where discoveries were kept underground to avoid prosecution, the unfortunate ones who got caught were burned alive for witchcraft
This struggle between science and religion still goes on today and not only in Astronomy but in Medicine and other discipline as well.
One lasting effect of Religion control is still with us today when we refer to Sunrise and Sunset, people have known for few centuries that the Sun does not move it’s the Earth that moves but for fear of the inquisition and the Vatican the lingo hasn’t changed and it's still with us.
