I went to high school about twenty minutes from a town where pretty much everyone had that twang. The didn't say "corn", the said "karn". They didn't say "cow", they said "kaoow". It was a little surreal, even then, because there were other farming towns all around it and only this only little place was like that.
And just to reinforce the stereotype a bit...
...education levels, standard of living and unemployment levels were always noticeably worse there than any of the nearby towns. Major entertainment in the town was "recreational fighting". It wasn't about winning or losing. There was no real conflict at all. It was just about beating the tar out of each other for fun.
I can't decide whether that's funny or tragic.
I sure never understood it.
