A guitarist I used to work with called me for a gig. He keeps talking about my style to the point that sometimes I feel like he's blowing smoke up my smoke hole, but he does try to compliment ppl.

Looks like a pretty good gig, really. Good bucks for 90 minutes at a local wine tasting. There's s'posed to be a "warm up" gig, too, which also pays. (He knows my rule of not playing in public for less than $100 in MY pocket, & has paid me out of his at other gigs that didn't pay as well.)

He has a three piece at the moment, but wants a bass player instead of just using the keys for bass at this one, for some reason. (I think he's really wanting to see if I'll fit with in the other guys, who are all pretty damned good musos!)

There's only gonna be 2 rehearsals, which doesn't bug me, but I want copies of the material, dammit!

Gig is set at May 29, & it's a fairly hoity & toity affair. I've been there before, but never played there before. I love the wine tastings, though!

We also got a call from our bizarrely missing guitar player for Flamingo Road, & he tells us his mom is dying from cancer, which is why he's been missing, supposedly. He still wants to get back into the band, though. The drummer, Mike, told me to go ahead & book some shows & he'd make sure the guitarist would be there. I ain't gonna do that until I'm a bit more sure, though...I mean, if the guy can't make practice, why bother, right? Still...if his story's true, I'd feel like a crumb for dumping him...but I never know with this guy, & it's frustrating at best!

That would be a good start to savin for Craigs Bass.

Take the bird(s) in hand and DO NOT SCHEDULE FOR THAT WHICH ISN'T IN PLACE YET.

Don't rule anything out, but I think you'd excel in a sit. with those other musos.

Come on Phil, I know you get sick and tired of having to baby sit.

These guys sound like they deserve a probationary look see.

If it doesn't work out, you can always go back to the absentee people. (if he shows up)

Keep it loose and do everything offered to you but make sure you get your $1 bill in hand/pocket as usual.

Who knows, you might uncover something grand and spectacular.

As far as the guys Mom being sick. I can relate. You know with my mom n dad n all. But I still know how to use a damn phone, write a letter, send an E mail, something.

Perhaps I worded everything a bit offly (awfully?)...I'm kinda excited about playing with these top-notch guys, & I ain't scared a bit! I just hope I'm not reading too much into it, really, cuz I've been wanting to get something going since before I came in here 2 years ago.

I've told you about some of the stuff I've done. it seems like the most successful gigs I've had in the last few years have been solo gigs, & I want to play in a great band, dammit!

As far as booking the questionable act? Not me. Not on your life OR mine!

I've had to replace this guy at the last moment once before & I don't consider that sh*t fun at all. I am too much the pro for that stuff. Gimme something I can work with or I won't work with it. It's like swinging a hammer with a loose head - you never know when things'll fall apart & you'll bust a window or your reputation.

Yep. Dddonnie & Mike & I all have phones. There's no reason why we can't be told when Ed can't make it. He can also leave messages at any of the three #'s. I'm not giving him any excuses, & I'm still not sure I want to give him any more chances, but then again - he's all we have...

...which is why I REALLY want to get into something else for awhile!

this one is called bei mir bist du Schon (by meer bist du shane) -which means to me you are beautiful -and we do it this way -its Cm -Ab G =then it goes to Fm Cm G -heres the tricky part it changes keys by going Cm,2,3,Ab G1 23Eb Dand now it goes to Gm where the structure is the same -then at the end it goes back to Cm by a sharpV Eb D9 Cm (the Eb and Cm -well it works lets put it that way)

Personally, I doubt that there will be anyone in attendence under the age of 70 who would recognize anything other than Pink Panther & So Into You, & MAYBE Ruby Baby.

I kinda dig the big band sounds. Some of my favorite movies are the old black and white big band musicals. I can totally see myself singing some of that stuff.

Aw, Robin! You'd love the stuff my drumer's working on in another project. 3 fem vox, doing swing music. I just left his place & heard some of the recordings of thier rehearsals, & all I can say is WOW!

Not my genre of choice, but they nail the stuff!

He's experimenting with some of the techniques that the Carpenters did in the studio, too, with another, folky guy. He records 3-4 vocal tracks (& this guy's a perfectionist - phrases things exactly the same every time), then he blends them together for a single vocal track. It's a very full vocal sound, but seems like it's only "one singer." Very cool!

Percussionists dream frankly, its all lose yet not tight. Let you hair down types of stuff.

Yeah, Chippy, some of this stuff is rather challenging, from a percussive standpoint. Bass & drums are more likely to accept that challenge, I'd wager, than guitarists & singers, as a rule - to step out of your comfort zone & do something truly different. Who knows what can be learned & applied from doing this sorta thing?

Yeah, I'd never sit down & listen to it for fun, but to study it & play it? SURE!

My only fear is that the work I put into this project will be wasted on an audience that simply cannot relate to it. If I were playing these things at a nursing home, they'd prolly love it, but in this setting? I think he's rather missing the mark in this venue, but I'll do it anyway. It might look good on a resume in the future, right? Who cares? I'm just a hired gun at this one.

For enough money, yep.

If I dont like the material there has to be a nice chunk of money involved?
Why? Cuz I dont make the big bucks in my day job like most of you do
