I looked in the mirror this weekend. I have to say if I want to progress and stand out? (Not that I do, I just want to get the buried stuff out). That Hell yeah! It does.

Its just as important as your pose when meeting a club/bar owner. More important than a beer brand and on stage? Paul has about the coolest here along with Halo. I haven't seen too many other live gigs on Youtube from folks here but I think you know what I mean?

It's the whole package just like a girl with a funny nose but you cannot take your eyes of her for a second because everything else is right there in front of you.

Thoughts. ........................

Ok, this is from the "old guy". I cannot justifiably knock todays Band image. I don't think Bands should look as though, they shop for clothes at salvage rummage sales. But, most people eventually become who they are, just by life experiences.
My era, my experience, my preference, dictates, that a Band on stage, dress as though they are the entertainers. Not the janitor, Carpenter, Brick layer, (or) outlaw Biker type ! I think you should be able to distinguish the performers from the audience(something that is very hard to do nowadays). But, of course not necessarily, over the top like, Porter Wagoner.
When I show up, they know, I'm in the Band. I try to look professional, as well as, deliver a professional performance.

I missed this thread, but I think when you show up to play a gig the audience should be able to tell that you are part of the band. I dont want to blend in with the audience, and I know a lot of the sh*t I wear is dated, but when Im getting ready to play people do know that Im part of the band. Our band does try to put on a physical show, we dont just sit there and play by the numbers, which at times can make some interesting musical statements. Im in a rare group that can take a mistake and turn it into a trademark. Not many bands that Ive played with or sat in with in the last few years seem to have that ability. I mean if your playing basic rock music its not rocket science. How hard can bashing out 3-5 chords be?

I think any group should come up with some sort of image and wear clothes accordingly. It could be suits or t-shirts, in the end you have to be comfortable with the image you are showing.

In the early 80s I did play in this new wave outfit and we wore makeup and teased our hair into weird shapes. I have to say I didnt stay long with that cause it just didnt feel right. I couldnt deliver the image so to speak and keep a straight face and all my metal buddies were ragging me out. The sad thing is that band became one of the hottest club bands in our area for a couple of years, and i think they did a couple of albums at some point so maybe I should have stayed with the program.

To me thru the years the British groups always seemed to have some sort of group image when they came here.

When I form a band, we're going to look more like surrealist objects rather than human beings. Imagine some dude with gauze warped around his face, covered in blood and attached to lots of beeping machines playing an electric violin chained to a bunch of Delay, loop, and distortion pedals. :D

Frankly I can't believe this is a discussion on this site. Go to OMG! with this crap...It's not what your wearing when you play, but how your playing that'll turn the heads. We wear whats comfortable to move around on stage in, and sweat your nads off doing. It's ALL about the music and ALWAYS should be...My 2 cents

Although image IS a good selling point, hence KISS, SLIPKNOT, ICP,GWAR,LIMP BIZKIT,etc. But sometimes its cause the music really isn't all that great, so they had to do something to sell that shiz. I grew up in 80's(GLAM /HAIR) and 90's(GRUNGE /SCUMMY)and did take part in THE LOOK, but in the end it was still just the music that mattered to everyone else. But hey, if it makes ya feel good, DO IT!

Dan, music is only a part of your job as a performer. You are forgetting the "entertainment factor." If all you want to care about is the music, then you may as well stay in the studio. When you are performing, you are supposed to be entertaining, as well as playing good music.

Understood philby, but what does what you're wearing have to do with it? I can go out in my undies or naked and put on a kickass show regardless...I play in a t and jeans and rock the place and everybody still shows up for the next gig so..just kind of a goofy discussion. When people remember your performance it should'nt be " Hey remember that guy in the overalls" no disrespect Paul, or "Hey, member those painted up girly fellas, what was their name again?".Key phrase "what was their name again? It's the performance and the music together that keep'em coming back for more. Hell I'm personal friends with a band who's gimmick is to have a dude in an Easter Bunny outfit jump around, crowdsurf and get the people into the performance. GREAT show, frickin hilarious..... guess how many people came to their last gig?......20. Ya know why? Their music BLOWS......

Not necessarilly. If you see a band that's wearing tuxedos, it brings to mind the wedding bands, doesn't it? Look at KISS. Thier silly outfits don't scream "emo" at you, do they? Your image is a huge part of who & what you are, especially when you hit the big league. The first time I ever saw Cake, they were all wearing western apparel, yet thier music was so far from c & w, it was really kind of cool how they pulled it off. For most gigs, though, they wore casual duds, which matched the singer's casual approach very well.

Separating yourself from the audience is a good policy, though, imho. When they see you, they should know you aren't one of them, but that you are the entertainment. It establishes a certain image that they can relate to, & can help to get thier attention. Anything that helps capture today's apathetic audiences is a good tool to use.
