It seems that, once again, the school system is all too eager to label the students, imo.

They want to target gangs, & that's a good thing. One way to do that would be to keep separating students who come from the same neighborhoods, I guess.

Montgomery County, MD, State's Atty John McCatrhy says "It's not about locking kids up It's about identification" and getting children into programs to steer them away from gang activity.

My questions -

How do you go about "identifying" the gang member?

What curriculae is being used to guide the student away from gangs?

Is this really a necessary addition to current school curriclum? What courses will be sacrificed to implement this new program? There ARE only so many hours in a school day.

Some of the other things, though, are more disturbing, like when a student is arrested for rape. See, this mentions nothing about convictions, it's about being arrested & labelled. They want the labelled student to be removed from the school the victim attends if he's arrested for rape.

I am not for this. It opens up too much control for false victims, in that they can merely make a claim against someone they don't like, & he will be taken out of school. That very real victim is now stigmatized in the system, without due process. His privacy rights don't even exist anymore, as this false claim comes to light. He & his family are punished without due process. Now, I understand that a school is a very different atmosphere than the world at large, but some things, imho, are absolutes.

What are the costs to the family who must now find transportation to a new school? Who will answer for those possible false claims? Meanwhile, the student is labelled throughout his school years & beyond, by an overzealous system, on an issue that should only be addressed in the courts.

Students aren't stupid. They learn lots of stuff that isn't in the schoolbooks while they attend these learning institutions, like how to manipulate the system to thier own ends.

More of this kind of crap is bound to clutter up an already overcluttered curricullum, & open up avenues to those who would misuse the system to thier own ends at the cost of others, now matter how innocent those others may be.

School, another anacronym for organizations trying to dictate and take away AMERICAN VALUES under the guise of educated leadership.

Hand them a roll of TP and tell them to flush it.

Maybe thats why we have 6 year olds bringing guns to school, much less educated , but smart enough to smell out dictators.

A school really SHOULD be run as a dictatorship, Glen.

The only way to deal with gangs is to make gang membership a fatal mistake. Sex, money and power are attractive to young prospective gang members.
America need to return to treating criminals as such.
Violent crime should be punished severely.
Some statistics state that nearly 1/3 of our prisons population of violent criminals are not even American citizens.
That is absurd.
Finger print and DNA identify them. Tell them if they come back into the USA we will hang them without trial and deport them to their native country.
Problem solved.

LOL!

So you think that children should vote on curricullum? C'mon, man! Schools have been run this way since...what...forever?

The child needs to learn what he's told to learn. He needs to do the work he's ordered to do.

There are 2 places democracy doesn't work, nor a representative gov't - school & work. Your co is YOURS to do with as you see fit. The school prepares the child for work. It should be run as a co is run, to a large degree, minus the profit factor, which is replaced by learning.

Last time I checked it's OUR money, OUR children, OUR country. You can have your opinion, here and with your vote. But that's as much sway as any of us get.

I really I hope I don't read about you in the news Glen.

Thats not what I said Phil
1.the dictatorial school board has become very adept at wasting the 9 grand a year or more most of the local homeowners shell out, under the guise of making sure the children get the best. That is here.
2. curricullum, this is being decided by the few, leaving out details,Christmas,Daniel Boone, The Alamo, the pilgrims, basic math without a calculator, just a few,,,,,Maybe we should leave it up to the kids.
3.LI seems to have a drug problem. To deal with it the local school board set up a ,get this,MANDATORY drug education for THE PARENTS,at night, with threats of all sorts of penalties against the students if at least one parent didn't show.
If that is not a dictatorial move by a small group ,funded with my money,to teach my children, in America...... then what is? Abuse of power can come at all levels.....

Jimmy I just love you,,,,,you make me

1 ) Yeah, school boards do that money-wasting thing everywhere, but it's amazing how much it costs to follow fed guidelines to get that all-important fed funding.

2 ) I agree, the curriculum is lacking, & I'd like to see it fixed by teaching the truth about Christmas (pagan rituals & sacred date borrowed to celebrate - why this was such a brilliant move by the church), Daniel Boone (basically a sociopath who couldn't stand living with ppl, so he became an explorer of the frontier, i.e. - a mercenary), the Alamo (a whole bunch of drunks, sociopaths, & bar brawlers got caught up in the Tex/Mexican politics & war of the time, who expected the US gov't to come bail them out...they were ultimately dissappointed), & the pilgrims (another group of religious weirdos who couldn't leave anyone alone with thier never-ending preaching & judging of others, who got so irritating that the Eng king threw them out of the country just so his ppl would be left the hell alone...so they came here & made things intolerable for each other, the ppl who had already crossed, & the indigent population called "Indians"). I kinda doubt we'd see eye to eye on what "truths" & "American values" would actually be taught to the students, though we'd probably agree totally on non-subjective subjects like Math, English, teaching evolution in Science class again...

3 ) They tried that kind of crap around here when Ian was in elementary school, but I had already developed a certain rapport with the teachers, principles, guidance counsellors & yes, even the school board, & when I & other parents went off on them, they changed tactics.

We do have a serious problem with heroin out here in the sticks, though. That amazes me.

Basically, what it comes down to is this - you wanna change anything, you gotta get involved. When the school was trying that dictatorial stuff with me & mine, I fought back, & won every time. At one point I actually removed my son from school for 2 days until an illegal move by the principal was addressed by the school board. I spoke up. I made waves. They hated to see me on the property, but I, & other concerned parents in my area, got some things done.

Once the school determines that you are a nut-job, they give your kid more leeway on the stupid stuff like mandatory parent attendence at those drug thingies, Glen, cuz they surely won't want you there disrupting thier planned programs.

Unfortunately, in the early stages of this sorta thing, you need to take time away from your day job in order to show them how determined you are, & that they cannot bully you with thier time-wasting tactics. A few hours here & there, though, does wonders.
