I remember some county or city that actually REQUIRED it's citizens to own at least one gun. It was a political response to the threat of gun legislation making the rounds. I also remember that once instituted, crime went WAY DOWN in that place!

I remember that one well, read about it soon after it was done. Kennesaw Georgia...Aren't you from Georgia, Craig?? Seems you would have known that one...

As for your other comment it seems I remember it was the sound of a pump shotgun criminals feared most but I may be wrong.

Another survey I read about said criminals were asked which house would they rob - one in new York where guns are very highly restricted and in many cases almost impossible to legally obtain, or somewhere like Houston where anyone without a criminal record can easily obtain a legal firearm. New York was the unanimous winner.

Take guns from citizens and you give criminals exactly what they want. Defenseless victims.

Oh hell, that's right!

I wasn't living in Georgia when they passed it, but I think they bring up articles about this every five years or so. So, I should have remembered that.

Of course, I'm not from Georgia originally, and I keep trying to leave it (no offense to Georgians) but at least I'm only 25 minutes from the Florida line now. I keep getting closer to being a Floridian again at least!

LOL :-)

I agree.

I realize there are statistics that more gun crimes are committed in America than in England for example, but those statistics wouldn't reflect how many lives are saved by a responsible citizen owning a gun either. Nor would it reflect how many crimes were PREVENTED by armed homeowners. In reality it could be far worse, without that protection.

Because, I don't think it's fair to compare British culture with our own. Taking the guns away from responsible citizens does not mean criminals would stop using them. If you can smuggle drugs that freely into the states, you can do the same with weapons. It may just create a whole new underground economy, with all the violence that usually brings.

One of the reasons we beat the British in the first place, was because our citizens were better shots, even teenagers. There's a letter that survived the American Revolution period, where an Englishman wrote back home, that he and the other British troops were doled out a very limited number of bullets to practice with, to save money, whereas, he complained, that even the kids here were better shots than the British soldiers, because they were used to hunting rabbits and such, on a daily basis.

I thought that was amusing. ;-)

So yeah, don't take away our right to bear arms and defend ourselves and our property, and as a side benefit... it keeps the government nervous.

;-)

The Swiss used to require the male citizenry to possess military caliber weapons / munitions. They were also required to qualify with said weapons on an annual bases to best of my memory.
I don't recall if this law is still in effect. It wouldn't surprise me at all if it were.

I should have included the caveat, that we should keep guns away from crazy people.

Just read about the Pentagon Shooting today.

And I searched 100 articles, because there are a few BLOGGERS that are calling this guy a "terrorist tebagger", alludiing to a possible relationship with the Tea Party movement.

That would be awfully convenient for the current administration if true, huh?

It's funny how the Dems blasted the Patriot Act, yet, now that they hold the White House, they extended it another year.

Hmm...

This site appears to have found out alot about the shooter from internet searches:

Man, the mainstream media is really lazy these days.

Maybe because they are all owned by about 5 Mega-Coporations now?

Think about it. How does the media survive? ADVERTISING. That's their primary income.

OK, now go count commercials on TV. Who advertises most? That's who the network depends on for its income. IF one major advertiser pulls out, the network is in huge trouble. That advertiser is responsible for up to half the network's income. so the corporation simply says "we don't like this story, pull it."

What choice does the network have? run the story and there goes a huge chunk of income...so if you count commercials it's easy to find out just who controls what you see on TV as "news". ever wonder why you heard little or nothing about Vioxx killing people until it was finally pulled off the shelves, after killing at least 10,000 people? Merckk is and was a huge advertiser, providing enough income to all the networks they could have the story buried. Just one example.

How often do you hear about anything negative concerning petroleum companies? Count commercials...Food corporations? Count commercials...Pharmaceutical companies? Count commercials...

What you see on CNN, Fox, NBC, ABC etc is not ALL the news, it's just what the major corporations doing all the advertising want you to know. Nothing more, nothing less.

I don't completely agree with everything Kevin Trudeau said in his book "Natural Cures they don't Want You to Know About", especially his constant insistence that he's "not in it for the money" (so why can't you get any serious information without joining his paid membership website? HUH?) but one thing is very true and everyone should really think about..

Follow the money...it's all about money.

As musicians & entertainers, I find it interesting that so many of us seem to look at this subject in this typically conservative fashion.

It pisses me off that I may have to wait to buy a shotgun. I might want one one day. It makes me even angrier that someone who made a mistake on his taxes, or got caught with a joint at Wolftrap (a federal entertainment site, btw, & there are NO federal "misdemeanors") could be refused the right to own a gun. It also angers me that I, as a citizen, have to register my guns so that the gov't knows about them. We have lost many of our rights, & our gov't has claimed far too much power over us & our personal information.

Slacker, I'm impressed also.
I'm also worried that many of the younger generation don't even know who George Washington was.

LOL

Yes my sons and I have a fairly good collection of rifles.
The PTR 91 I have is very similar to the one pictured except for a nice flash suppressor and a full aluminum round hand guard
It is a simple weapon with less moving parts than an AR15 style of weapon. Operates on a delayed blow back with roller lock principle.
Pull two pins and she field strips in seconds. All of the HK 91 German manufactured parts are instantly interchangeable as it is manufactured to original German military specifications. With the exception of the selective fire (trigger) control group.
Chambered in 7.62 x 51 NATO (308 Win) with a drum rear aperture site that is adjustable to 400m.
The sport of shooting is fun and challenging.
People at the range for the most part are very open and friendly.
We (total strangers) talk, shoot each others weapons, share equipment and reloading or smithing information.
You might be surprised how many women shoot for fun and competitively.
It's interesting to me how similar it is to music. Not a lot of difference between two guitarist admiring each others axe.

Not surprised at all.

The percentage of women owning guns and going to shooting ranges, have increased dramatically each decade.

I think it's great... just don't screw one over in a relationship!

My step dad, used to take me shooting often. Taught me how to care for the weapons, shoot them, clean them, etc... We shot everything from 357 Magnums and other handguns, to rifles and shotguns. He used to have a very illegal, sawed off, gold plated shotgun, that was just the most beautiful gun I've ever held!

I've wanted to pick it back up again, and teach my step kids how to shoot, but money is limited, and I end up buying them a PS3 or something like that instead.

But one of these days...

Well, hopefully, before they take them all away from us. :(
