Right on Carrie, I think you need both. I was self-taught, and later took music theory classes to go beyond where I was able to get on my own. But dedicated practice (read: thousands of hours) is the only way to get really good.

well all that stuff would be nice but being that money and time are a very important factor it will be a long time.
