My friend once loaned me his '65 strat for several months... I will be the first to admit, it was a phenomenal instrument. To the point that anything built post-CBS ownership is just far to crappy to play, in comparison. I also played a '79 strat that was similar, and probably among the last of the great guitars they ever made.
The last strat I bought new (american, '94 I believe) was a hunk of crap that couldn't hold an intonation much less even stay in tune. I ended up trading it in at sam ash for a frikkin Boss pedal.

I agree with Slacker the first time I played a Strat I was instantly hooked. It fits my hands better than any guitar I have ever played. The reason most people don't like Strats is YOU HAVE TO BE A REAL GUITAR PLAYER TO MAKE THEM SOUND GOOD! (just kidding) there are a lot of players on here that play other guitars than Strats that are way better than me. I personally think that guitars are like any other piece of equipment in any trade there are good and bad. You just have to play the guitars and you know instantly if one feels good in your hands. The 1978 Les Paul that I used to have was the same way, that guitar just fit my hands and a good guitar is a DIRECT link between my brain and hands almost no limitations my soul is linked to them when I pick one up. I had to sell that Les Paul to bring my first son into the world. He is now 29 years old. We were setting in a pub the other night and (jokeing of coarse) I looked at him and said I got f@cked I want my Les Paul back.

Okay.. so you are telling me I'm a dumbass because (in your opinion) roads, police, and schools are DEMOCRATIC ideals?!? I'd like to see you argue that as a fact and back it up, rather than jsut tossing insults into the arena. But that's how it's done in America these days, eh?

Did you really need to resort to name-calling just because you don't see things from the same perspective as I? grow up or leave. seriously. We're adults here. As much as I might disagree with folks like Craig or Sans, we're all still friends, we have heated debates, sure, but that's what debates are. We're ALL Americans, and we ALL want what's best for our country in the end.

Look- like it or not, our country is a REPUBLIC, with a strong SOCIAL and DEMOCRATIC backbone and ideals. Without SOCIALIST ideals, you wouldn't have schools, police, fire co. Without democratic ideals, you wouldn't have civil rights.

Perhaps instead of seeing everything as an extreme and as separated entities, you might want to open your eyes and see that it's all symbiotic relationships, you know "melting pot" wasn't just about races. It was about ideals.

here's how I break it down (and why I play Kramers)-

Les Paul - Nice FAT sounds, neck too thick though, frets feel to large. Very heavy guitar, hard to gig constantly with. Tons of tone but not extremely diverse (sound).

SG - Solid humbucker sound, not as fat as LP, neck thinner, feels good, lighter guitar overall too. Overall a very like-able guitar, although not very diverse (sound).

Strat - Nice shimmering sounds, sharper, more distinct single coil sounds. Neck is thin and a little round, fits well. Difficult to get thicker sound, but not impossible (gilmour did it). Older models are heavy(ier). More diverse than gibsons generally.

Tele - twangy! Neck super thin (too thin for me), sounds great, but extremely non diverse once out of the realm of country music. Limited applications in rock, as everything starts sounding like springsteen on it.

Kramer - H/S/S config (at least the models I like). My current one has a coil tap on the humbucker, so I can pretty much make it sound like an LP, a Strat, a tele, or even a p90 guitar. The neck is a perfect cross between a strat and a LP (although more like a strat, but just a little fatter), feels PERFECT.

I've yet to find a cover that I can't duplicate the sound almost exactly to, with one exception, and that is my EPI DOT (based on the 335), which is a warmer tone than even the LP. I cannot duplicate it, which is partly why I own a dot lol...

If life were perfect, I'd own a nice strat, LP, 335, SG, Tele, and even a Jaguar .. but I can't afford all that.

Most of my Strats have super distortion humbucker pickups in the bridge position. Some have three single coil pups wired as humbuckers. Those sound the best to me. Clean sparkling highs with more mids and lower frequency response.

Several of them have vari tones to give me about any sound I want.

I use compound radius thin Warmoth necks that are the most comfortable I have played. However, the last three Warmoth necks I bought are pretty much crap. Maybe they ran out of good wood.

I have two Les Pauls, and two SG's along with several arch top "F" hole guitars. An American Telecaster, a Vantage, Ibanez, and a Goya classical guitar are the odd ball guitars. Naturally there are a few guitars lying around here not mentioned.

But my 7 Strats rule. 8)

This nice chunky sound came from a Strat. My guitar lead work isn't great, but the sound is good. This was a first attempt playing "dirty".

And the very beginning lead intro of this is a Strat. I think it sounds almost like a wind instrument.

No doubt teh strats are tone monsters, as are the gibsons, etc. To me, that's more about pickups and amps. One of my favorite tones is a single coil tele going thru an Orange "tiny terror" head, into a 2X12 greenback cab. Although limited in variety, it's a perfect tone (and on my list of items to acquire) for my tone in my originals band. I'm able to simulate it with my Kramer and current gear, but not duplicate it perfectly. My oether guitars can't even come close (epi dot, agile LP copy, douglass (Ibanez RG copy), and a mexi strat). Yeah, I'm poor lol, it shows.

But all said and done, the hardest thing to find is comfort and playability. I played a lot of crappy guitars in my youth, before I finally felt what a "real" guitar felt like. It's amazing to discover there's things you can do on a real guitar that you would just fumble on a cheapo, simply because of the comfort level.

I have one very nice Agile AL-2000 (LP copy) that plays like a million bucks, The neck is more like an EPI LP neck, but the thing sounds like mud. I'm hoping to pop in a set of JBJs soon and see if it can be the tone monster I hope it is. It's mahogany, so it's got the potential. Other than that, the action is amazing, the neck is straight, and it came stock with Grover tuners, stays in tune perfectly. I was shocked that this was a $200 guitar.

Now I'm just rambling lol, sorry. I wish I had my friends '65 strat again :( It's gone now, I believe.

OK, this being a thread about Sarah Palin. Here is my two cents worth.
If she only had better material,..She could be a stand up comedian. But, as a president ? HELL NO !
The first time I saw "W" Bush, on television, I did NOT know the man. But, I told my wife, he is a "Dumb ass". It shows all over the man. I just look at him and see "Dumb Ass". He doesn't have a clue.
Everything that I have heard about McCain, suggests he has served his country above and beyond. Possibly to the point of effecting some of his judgements. HE HAS DONE ENOUGH !!! He should RETIRE, and get a LIFE!!!!!!
If the republicans ever find someone that's got their sh*t together. I might vote Republican. So far, what I see, are pathetic losers that want to make a name for themselves.

I duno why ppl bash Obama fot using a teleprompter. It keeps him on topic, & keeps him from saying stupid stuff off the cuff. He gets his true message across very well with it, & doesn't hafta remember how many states we actually have.

Bush could have used one to his benefit, if only he could frikken READ.

Hell, even Nixon used one. Every pres since him has, as well, except for the unfortunately illiterate Bush Jr. So frikken WHAT? It's a good idea, & looks much better than referrung to your HAND, doesn't it?

Ppl use notes all the time. A teleprompter is no different, imo. Gimme the facts.

Palin is a twit, & it really shows when she tries to hide her dirty little secret notes on her one hand, while she bashes Obama for using a teleprompter on the other. She should get with the times & use better tools, otherwise she looks like a high school student cheating on a test.

Hey Kramerguy, just kind of throwing this out there. If you're in the market for some killer pickups, check into this guy:

http://bensoncustom.yolasite.com/handwound.php

I took a chance on his pickups just on a hunch that they would be good, and he didn't disappoint at all!! I'm on my second set, and looking to get a 3rd soon. His pickups are REALLY good. I haven't tried his Humbuckers yet, but if they're anything like his single coils, you won't be sorry at all. All you do is shoot him an e-mail, tell him what you have, tell him what you're looking for as far as sound, I even sent him some Youtube clips of what I wanted my pickups to sound like, and he recreated them perfectly! He recreated my '57RI Strat pickups for $76 for the WHOLE SET.

It takes a month to get your pickups, but well worth the wait in my opinion. I know how it is when you're wanting pickups and you see the prices.. Ughh!! I'm so glad I ran across this guy's site. Eventually, I want his pickups in all but 2 of my guitars.

It's nice to be able to just describe what you want and have someone know how to do it for you.

Anyway, I just thought I'd throw that out there.. Maybe just give it a thought. He only charges $25-$30 per pickup. I'm 100% happy with what he's made me so far.

Awesome Phil! The whole world is getting used to reading from computer screens, from the kid working at McDonalds to the President himself. Actually I would have no problem with Ms. Palin reading from a notebook, as long as it was factual.

Weird how this thread is modulating between politics and guitars. Damned musicians!
