I wasn't particularly impressed with the performance. Not that I'm a big Who fan, never really was, but it was kind of deflating to see them at a level far below what they once were...but it was better than seeing somebody expose their booby...

I saw them around the same time opening for Thin Lizzy. Bon was pretty cool, after a few songs he ripped off his shirt and swaggered around the stage while Angus had his school boy outfit with wireless set in his backpack. Very cool indeed!

The Who in their prime could blow the doors off from AC/DC or Metallica or any other band you could mention. If you don't have a copy of "Live at Leeds" get one and become enlightened.

That is absurd.

Bring in Black Sabbath :)

I'm not a big fan of fake boobies...

The only part I thought absurd was getting a foreign act to perform at a particularly American sport event. Why not get a mariachi band, or Johnny Clegg & Savuka, or a Kabuki revue to play at a NASCAR race?

As far as thier performance is concerned, all I can say is that stadiums are the absolute worst venues, as a rule, sound-wise. There have been damned few perfect Superbowl 1/2-time shows that weren't lip-synched, & I was glad to see that they didn't go that route. The Who DO have class.

I practically worship these guys. Daltry has a voice I would kill for, & Townshend's creativity is possibly the best in r & r, imho. Those men will always be icons to me, & a single questionable performance won't sway that feeling I have for them, & I really doubt that age had much to do with thier problems with the show. I've heard other recent live recordings of both Daltry & Townshend that would seem to deny that.

I saw them twice with Bon. Opening for Kiss on what I think was thier first US tour and then I saw them on the Highway To Hell tour with Sammy Hagar and Mothers Finest opening. There was some awesome concerts in those days.

All the detractors should ask themselves...

Could YOU do better?
Have YOU filled stadiums for 40 years?
Have YOU recorded a dozen albums that a stadium full of people still know the words to and sing along with 30-40 years later?
Do you think YOU could match their show at age 65?

I don't think I could match the show they did and I'm 10 years younger than Townsend. Not sure I could have matched it 20 years ago...by the way his guitar sounded great. That pile of Fender amps looked and sounded really good too.

I played Behind Blue Eyes on the school courtyard in 1972. Usually more than once a day, the people just wanted to hear it. I've played a few other Who tunes over the years, but mainly that one. Pinball Wizard...one of the most famous songs of all time, still gets played on classic rock stations, and if I play the opening 5 seconds almost everyone in the room knows what song it is. I've seen 20 year olds singing along...

Whether you like the Who or not, it cannot be denied their music has withstood the test of time, they may be old farts but they still have enough energy to get out there and rock, and they mastered stadium rock many years ago. They also knew it would be really tough to get a good sound, acoustics in that kind of venue are horrible, and they pulled it off quite well.

Say what you wish, if you didn't like it I'm not going to change your mind so I won't try, but try to realize these guys have been rock and roll legends for many years, they had the entire stadium singing along in several places, and they got up there and did a SHOW...they didn't just stand there and play like 90% of the bar bands I've seen in my life and some of the pros too.

As far as I'm concerned, they still rock. I loved it.

And yeah I'd love to see Zeppelin next year too, JW...

Foolish questions.

Being able to do something is not a prerequisite for criticism. Stupid, stupid way to frame the argument...

Colors it sure beats the hell out of Lady Ga Ga, of course her costume may have trumped the Who.

Hows your band going these days, I havent seen any updates?

Unfortunately I dont think any of us are in a position to make a decision on who should play gigs like this. I would love to make those calls, Hey could you guys clear your calendar for the Superbowl Halftime Show. I wonder who actually makes that call?

While this is true, there is a saying:

Those who can, do. Those who can't, teach. And those who can't even teach, become critics.

haha how very true jw! I feel that the majority of football fans are blue collar, middle-aged, beer-drinking folks that grew up listening to classic rock. The Who was an appropriate fit for the program. Demographics fit into the consideration. I would love to see the who live in concert.

Santos maybe we should all send some press kits in for next years Superbowl!

Not that it matters to me, but I wonder what a gig like that pays or if bands just do it for the PR. Im sure someone can dig up info like this, I jsut dont want to take the time, but it would be interesting to know how they pick a band and negotiate a deal. Shoot, I wonder what happens to that stage? They could send it to me, not that I would ever get somewhere that I could use it, just set it up in the yard and play on it on the weekends.

HUH??? How can one criticize something another hasn't done or is not capable of?

We're all musicians here, if you want to criticize the Who, that's fine with me but also keep in mind the conditions. And I stick by what I said, I feel it was very valid. If you want to say they were old, didn't play well, lip synched or whatever, fine.

I still ask...

Could YOU do better?

Perfect way to frame it if you ask me, if you wanna slam them, ok put up or shut up. Could YOU do better??? They have proven themselves for over 40 years. You saw that, the whole stadium was singing along...

so can you do better?
