This Martin: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/MD200SN3
I bought my house (20+ years ago) for less than that! My wife thinks the inlay work is nice (I don't) and I certainly don't know why they did the sides in two pieces the way they did.

This Gretsch electric: http://www.americanmusical.com/Item--i-GRE-2410106-LIST Yeah, they removed 2 pickups on purpose, and its not very pretty either!

On the other hand, I went to a Taylor Guitars 'New Model Show' last week, played a number of their lower-end guitars. I've been wanting to add a nylon string guitar to my arsenal, but money is tight. Tried a Breedlove that I had been eying online ($500) and it sounded like crap. But this Taylor: https://www.sweetwater.com/store/detail/114ceNV7 played like butter and sounded great. The matte walnut finish of the body is a little unusual. I wanted to get it right then - they were offering 22% off regular price for that night only - so it only would have been $165 more than the Breedlove, and included a nylon case. But my wife nixed that plan!

I am not impressed with Taylor guitars in the least. A friend bought a very high end Taylor and it cuts out and sounds like crap without the preamp he bought for it. The input jack is plastic and their tech support is snobby. Now days when you by a Taylor you are simply buying a name not necessarily quality.

I do like the 814 and 914 series rosewood backed Taylors. the rosewood seems to mellow out that high end zing that i find so prevalent in Taylors.

i played one of their nylon strings a while back and hated it. very boxy sounding and it had the thinner nut spacing comparable to steel strings (i guess to appeal to steel stringers?).

absolutely LOVE my GODIN Mulitac nylon string. i think they go for around $900 new these days.

I play a Breedlove Focus (american made) but oy, those Korean Breedloves are horrible.

The best guitar for the money is Larrivee. I've seen a $700 model sound as good as the $7,000 model. The only difference was the binding. Have never heard or played a bad one.

Well, that's unusual, Taylor are known for great customer service, and if you buy new from them, your guitar is guaranteed for life. I'm guessing he bought a used one? If it has the older ES1 system, you need to use an XLR cable to get full balanced volume out of it, probably why he "needs" a preamp, using 1/4" guitar cable.
The jack is not plastic, but the end pin-preamp assembly is plastic. the Taylor design keeps the 'hole' in the wood much smaller compared to the usual Fishman preamp big plastic door cutout.

A friend has a steel string Godin Multiac, and he added a lipstick pickup to it. I've played a few times. Does not stay in tune worth a crap. The acoustic sound is marginal, and plugged in only slightly better. But some people don't like the Taylor sound (which can depend on what strings you use, of course)

I don't want a full-width classical neck - my fingers are too short, so only looking at the 'hybrid' (1-3/4") necks.
