Interesting Topic.
Yeah I do from time to time. I do have some good material, I like it, if I didn't I wouldn't bother. I do listen to it regularly also, so that I get a perception of what I am really doing. Then I go listen to hundreds of songs by other people, mostly Indie artists and such in my genre, then sort of place myself in that database for a moment. I've had perhaps now, around a 1000 really nice comments, both online and off about what I do, but that just isn't enough.
I think everyone here will have written ONE really good song, with merit that could go somewhere with it. However - Video and TV is the box to aim to get into.Without that you really have nothing these days. YouTube used to be a great place to promote. However they missed the 'Friend and communication' ethic that spawned MySpace and FB. Sure you can post a thousand videos, but it is the one GOOD one that gets attention.
Even if you did post a GREAT song. The amount of publishing time on boards like this, would quickly bore the pants off most. So people create more and more material, often not as good as that ONE song, then we muddy the waters by over calculating the response, by posting more.
What I am starting to do, is get my package together, I strongly suggest anyone who wants to even have a chance at something, to do the same.
* Video
* Albums including GOOD artwork.
* Profile & Bio
* Good images
* Website? Hmmm
* Demos only for would be consumers
* A CLEAR Band/Musician/Composer Image
Most promoters want that one song, either for you to play it, or to sell it on to someone else. Make sure what your Market is, and if you are willing and have the balls to sell it on. No ego's apply.
But most promoters want you to do it again, and again, and again. That is where the REAL money is, you then become a viable product to consumers.
"Listen to my new song" generally will not cut it these days.
As for me, I know I am not mainstream as regards my musical product. I will attempt to change this a little in the future, use the backdrop I have in music, but the way I write will not change. I think that is a very, very important asset to anyone involved in music. One day you'll be the 'Doggies danglers', the next month someone else will be. But staying there, doing what YOU do as an outfit or solo act, is of paramount importance, because that is you. People want that more than ever these days.
Cheers.
