8) I tell em up front. Practice is what you do on your own time. Rehearsal is to work out the kinks and tighten it all up. If you show up w/ out having put in the time to learn your stuff we dont need you. Seems harsh but i am not willing nor want to be a teacher. you need help w/something, thats cool, but set up a time w/ me outside of the regular rehearsal. And of course people do have off days and thats fine too but if its there habit to be unprepared there gone. i also tell them they need to be able to show each and every time, real emergencies accepted but like wy wife, girlfreind, whatever is on the whatever kick dont cut it either. A lot of people like the IDEA of being a musician but dont want to do the work.

Sans makes a great point; when you're doing original material a lot of time is spent learning at rehearsal. But there is no excuse for not knowing your parts in a cover band; DTMA.

I'm about to hold our first practice as a new band this weekend.
Pretty bleepin siked too...!

Ours is maybe a bit different, in that not only will we do csome covers, but largely my wife's stuff.
But, the stuff is going to be developed from simple vox/piano into full band arrangement & so as a band, we're going to all have input/idea sharing.
What I'm doing to help/speed the process, is a blog page with links to the chord charts, and to MP3's of the basic tune(s) for the fellas to prepare with & start the creative processes for when we do sit down together.

I wonder if this question of how best to run a practice would largely depend upon the bands goals?
Meaning, are you heading toward decent paying gigs...or more of a 'if we make any money, great but that's not the goal..'

Rich

Your wife's music is real good man. Conversion to full band would be an awsome task.

Best of luck bro!
