Do you think that people as a whole, take a female musician as seriously as a man?

Genre begets gender. In classical music, folk music, jazz and country women are on much more equal footing as perfomers. Everyone seems to be refering a lot to rockers. Rock music is much more a mans world. Sure we can all point to a few women rockers and say how good they are but if you look at the big picture it's obvious that women aren't as numerous, don't get as much respect. Personally I'd much rather hear a good male vocal within that genre. As for instrumentalists I care about the playing only. You just don't see that many great female rock instrumentalists. Please don't give me a link to one :) I know there are a few out there. Move away from rock and metal and the playing field becomes much more even.

Now Captain the fact that you are considering playing with this person after the comments you've made does not speak well of you. Are you that hard up for cash?

^ Great point. We are focusing on rock here. Seems to be mostly rockers here. Like you said "Move away from rock and metal and the playing field becomes much more even."

in the world of popular music today looks trump talent. It started with the rise of music videos. If a woman came along today like Janis Joplin or Mama Cass they would not make it in music today, not attractive enough to be in a music video. The only thing that should matter is musical ability. I would say that the mass market music business does not take women seriously at all unless they can show off their belly buttons and/or cleavage. It's a sad sate of affairs. Personally I have never been in a band with a female band member. I haven't had the opportunity to play in a band with one. I would have figured by now that some woman sooner or later would have been a killer lead guitarist with skills equal to any of the famous guitarists (Hendrix, Van Halen, Vaughan, etc.). It's actually amazing there hasn't been ANY woman with that reputation. Maybe there's far more sexist views of women in music than we realize. ARe musical instruments that difficult to play that only men can play them at a high level? I don't think so. It has to be how young girls are raised and educated. Why aren't more of them in heavy metal bands or classic rock bands or ANY contemporary genres? All the times we have searched for new band members I can only remember a few women responding. Kind of sad really. Later...

Hey Gang,

Man , Im shocked that no chicks have chimed in... :? ...Well,I tell ya boys...Ive worked with 5-6 females since 75, two on a national level...My experience has been if they play an instrument and have some theory knowledge they treat the band with respect and consider themselves an equal and we (the band ) the same...HOWEVER, the single artist syndrome with the band being salaried and a seperate entity (business wise), a MUCH different story...Its a hostage situation  Seen it happen alot with other female (vocal only) led bands on the circuit as well..Yeah , I ran into a female drummer in NM back in 86 that sure had my respect...Played country with a jazz feel....Also, ya cant beat havin that alto harmony and being able to do Kansas, Journey, Styx etc.....Hey Cindy, are you on here?.....We're talkin about cha...Shes one of the gooderns...Yeah , its sad it has to be that way most of the time, even on a local level...

Patsy Cline, Janis Joplin, Ann Wilson, Donna Summers, Ella Fitzgerald (Astounding singer!), and so on and so forth. There have been many great female singers in this world that deserve equal if not more respect than the male singers. However, as far as instruments go, especially in the rock, blues, jazz worlds, the most talented musician I have seen is Nancy Wilson. That woman could play a guitar, and I bet you any day (Even 50 years from now) could crush me. So forget the gender barrier, that is a woman who is talented. She was before this stupid time of videos that is all about one thing.

Now here are many more female talents,

Carol King, Carly Simon, Lizz Wright, Aretha Franklin, Diana Ross, and I could probably go on forever, lol.

Those were talented woman of those times, now here are a couple from now: Cristina Scabbia (Lacuna Coil) and Amy Lee (Evanescence). Incredible voices for this day and age.

So it goes to show there are some extremely talented woman out there. FishermanBob, Nancy Wilson is the only guitarist I will stake my neck out for and say is better than Van Halen. I know I am going to get bombed for that, but I hate EVH. He sounds like crap to me, even though I did steal some tapping stuff from his Eruption solo, lol. He is a great guitarist even though I do not like his sound and is better than probably most, but she is better than him. I think EVH is overrated. I could name probably 30 guitarists who can play circles around him. The thing that I think made him famous (Amongst musicians) is that he was doing multifinger tapping back in a time where that was all fairly new ground to work with (It did exist, just not as major till he came along with it to my knowledge).

I have never seen a female guitarist as good as Nancy Wilson, I have listened to her for years. My mother is a diehard fan of Heart.

So, go NW! But as far as guitar goes she is one of the only ones I can think of that I would put up there with the likes of the best male players.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.

She's a great rhythm guitarist, but on lead? She plays lead, but she's mostly rhythm, and likes acoustic guitar best, at that. Heart has always had a dedicated lead guitarist, which was not Nancy. Right? Maybe I'm confused.

I'm assuming your mom introduced you to some of those? That's cool, my mom was the same. I grew up hearing Carol King, Carly Simon, Aretha, Minnie Ripperton, Billie Holiday, Dinah Washington, Lena Horne, Kate Bush, Edith Piaf, and also older stuff like George Gershwin and Scott Joplin.

I got quite a music education from her records, which I guess is partly why I enjoy so many syles of music!

Thanks mom. LOL

Nancy was not the lead, it was Roger Fisher I believe (I had to look that up). But Nancy has played solos during the concerts and I have never seen anything quite like it. I remember she played an extended intro to Crazy On You, woo, amazing. Complex too.

My mother introduced me sort of to Carly Simon and Carol King, she would watch the different channels and I would listen sometimes. I am not a major fan of their music, but they apparently have tons of talent. Diana Ross, Aretha Franklin, I saw on television as well and heard on the radio. More talent, lol. As for Lizz Wright, I saw her perform a piece by Ella Fitzgerald in a tribute concert. She has an amazing voice.

Dinah Washington was also talented, my grandfather introduced me to her music, as well as Billie Holiday, and Edith Piaf. All I know of George Gershwin is the "Gershwin Tune."

I will easily say my mother is the reason I know so much about music for someone my age. She introduced me to all of the classic rock, had me memorizing the bands when I was 10, lol. I remember listening to Led Zeppelin, The Scorpions, The Doobie Brothers, Peter Frampton, The Eagles, The Beatles, The Rollingstones, Wings, etc... Then she introduced me to Pearl Jam, Collective Soul, Soundgarden, Alice in Chains, and all of the bands of the grunge era. I had heard Metallica as well during this time, only later to become an avid fan.

I know many many types of music, I have even listened to Seal on occasion, I use to hear him a lot in the 90's since he was so big then. These days I have listened to techno and techno rock as well. A new band I am listening to these days is A Perfect Circle, great stuff.

So yeah, I have heard of all of these singers, which is great, it has made me a better guitarist in the short time I have been playing.

Back on topic though, Ann Wilson has a Hell of a range for a female singer. Talk about power, my mother sings like her. I was talking to my mother about that last month, I was like "How come you never sang for a band?" She told me she did and people loved her voice, but she did not have the time to do the gigging, working and all. I still hold to my opinion, female leads do not get as much attention as male.

Peace out, GuitarAnatomy.
