I blame religious zealots! :x[/quote]

Religion has been at war with science forever particularly the Catholics, during the Renaissance discoveries had to kept secret if not scientist would suffer the wrath of the Inquisition one example was Galileo who confirmed through his invention of the Telescope Copernicus Helios center theory (Helios=Sun) IE he placed the Sun at the center of our solar system, for his effort Galileo was tried where he was compelled by the priests to renege what he knew and proved to be the truth to safe his life, Galileo was sentenced to the "Ergastolo" (Life imprisonment) by the inquisition he died in prison (house arrest)

The Vatican pardoned him 400 hundred year later and this is one example of what religious zealots have done over the centuries to stifle science in order to keep the Status quo with the Pope in control of people ‘minds.

Thanks to Guttenberg and his invention of the printing press books were printed faster than the Vatican could stop them, one of the books written in Spain titled “the black book” was particularly thorny to the priests, they tried to stop the dissemination of these information to no avail, dozens of such cases occurred where discoveries were kept underground to avoid prosecution, the unfortunate ones who got caught were burned alive for witchcraft

This struggle between science and religion still goes on today and not only in Astronomy but in Medicine and other discipline as well.
One lasting effect of Religion control is still with us today when we refer to Sunrise and Sunset, people have known for few centuries that the Sun does not move it’s the Earth that moves but for fear of the inquisition and the Vatican the lingo hasn’t changed and it's still with us.

I assume this refers to climate change. If not, please provide links or I will assume your remarks are half baked.

But yes, part of it is education. Our students lag many countries in math and science.

jimmydanger wrote:Other countries are leap frogging us in math and science, and we will pay the price for this eventually.

Eventually... is happening... NOW!

i blame both...apparently one of our main producers of school books in texas is removing evolution and other truths and replacing it with religious propaganda. we also lag in the language department, just about everyone in europe can speak at least some english. granted in my case i just plain forgot the 5 yrs of spanish and 4 of french i was taught lol. it genuinely makes me sad to think of the state our nation is in intellectually. and we seem to be going backwards. separation of church and state. leave religious education in churches and be penalized by law if u bring it into schools.

Wow, that is disheartening, thanks for bringing this up. Hopefully those kids will seek out the truth elsewhere.

LOL ok does anyone remember the spanish flu??? it killed millions. with that said wouldnt u rather be safe than sorry. and ppl make a mockery of the term pandemic. pandemic has nothing to do with how deadly or potentially life threatening a virus can be it simply means its widespread. and in reference to the ice age mentioned. england experienced what was known as the little ice age where the ambeint temp only dropped an average of 8 degrees and it ruined everything. and to say that global warming is a farce is in itself a farce. it is understood that our planet goes through cycles but global warming doesnt mean it will only get hot. the heat will mess with all sorts of things currents in the ocean and in the air and can in turn make winters colder as well. even if it's not a reality the pollution we release into the environment is not good and has and will continue to cause damage and something must be done to curtail it. and if the only way to convince society to do something about is to hide it under the ruse of global warming then so be it because lets face it as a whole the ppl of this nation or more generally the planet might as well through their own poo theyre so borderline retarded. palins gonna get me for that one eh?

Yeah, Texas is the state with the most schools, so the textbook industry waits until they have ordered what they consider to be proper learning material before they even print the books available for the rest of the country. Thus, we lose evolution, except as a footnote, in some of these tomes.

And we wonder why we're so far behind the rest pf the world in education! Between these backward-thinking tactics, & the feel-good self-esteem classes, & the lack of discipline, it's a wonder our kids learn anything at all.

I'm sure many of these states (Texas, Kansas, etc) think you only need one book: The Good Book. I feel sorry for kids that have to grow up there.

its unfortunate because they are indoctrinated with this rhetoric and become close minded without reaching out for alternative ways of thinking. and i mean its not their fault necessarily its just what they where born into. blame the parents lol. its kind of like that westboro baptist church(which by the way some friends and i met them with a protest of our own a couple yrs ago when they showed up for the ky derby and made them look like fools, the cops were on our side and we managed to run them off two hours before they were scheduled to leave, ill post pictures of some of our posters hahaha they are priceless) but my point is there was a 16ish yr old girl that was with them and the only reason shes so ignorant is because of the environment her parents brought her up in. its so sad.

J, did you not read the whole thread? Both Rycky and Phil mentioned Texas before I did, yet I see no rebuke. Maybe I have a target on my back (but I also have an AK-47 and shoot back). If what they mentioned is incorrect please say so.

Thats ok J, thats my job.

P.S.
Jimmy, I apologize about my last remarks concerning your state bird.
I crossed a little over the line.

At the end of the day, what or whom, can you really trust?
Which publisher? Which article?

I don't have anything against Texas, myself. I think it's a mistake to set the learning standards of the entire counrty in the hands of any single state.

I'm sure that Texans are't stupid. After all, they gave us Texas Instruments, back in the day, right? The forerunner of the modern PC. The transistor also came from Texas, if I recall correctly.

When it comes to religious dogma vs. science, there are bound to be some nay-sayers concerning evolution, especially. Sorry, intelligent designers, but evolution HAS been proved.

But this is not the only area where the two butt heads.

Look at the issues with stem cell research, which could possibly give new life, complete with true cures for innumerable diseases & birth defects & accident victims across the board, worldwide. I see nothing religiously wrong in making the lives of these ppl bearable, even to the point of making them contributing members of our society, in some cases, where it wasn't possible in the past (or present, for that matter).

The betterment of mankind should always be the goal of inventors, & science should always seek the truth, rather than to "prove religious history."

Years ago there were those nutcases, in Texas, curiously enough, that sought to prove that man & dinosaur coexisted in the past. They found fottprints in hardened mud that seemed to prove thier point (nevermind that the prints could have been made at any time over millions of years). They dumped thousands of rocks into the Rio Grande, cuz they didn't prove thier point. Those rocks actually changed the PH levels in the river, & became a source of pollution. This is what can & often does happen when the unscientific mind goes to work to prove religious dogma. Possibly invaluable fossils were lost & the river was polluted & an entire ecosystem was put in jeopardy, & for what? To disprove evolution?

(Please note that I have no idea if the nutcases were actually FROM Texas. I'm just saying that it happened there. Chances are that they came from all over the country & possibly beyond. The world has no shortage of nutcases.)

These idjits have tried to change history, paleantology, anthropology, medical research, astronomy, & even mechanics, in thier zeal to make us all live by the teachings of thier various religions. I cannot imagine the knowledge that has been lost to thier stupidity, but I see some of its affects on our society, & it sickens me, because it's made us all a little more ignorant in the eyes of the world. It's downright embarrassing.

Keep science in the hands of scientists. Keep teaching ppl to BECOME scientists. That only makes sense, to me.

Eh, no biggie Zip, one benefit of living here is you grow thick skin.

BTW J, I have lots of friends in Texas and hold nothing against the state - you cannot hold a state accountable for the policies of its lawmakers. However, if you do agree with a policy that would make evolution a footnote in a textbook I have a big problem. It's the children I am concerned with; the adults are already damaged.
