I'll chime in for a moment here

3 yrs ago I weighed 207lbs

Today I maintain 162 lbs

The main thing I did was drink water, cut out all cokes and soft drinks

I counted calories for a while and got the in the habit of weighing in the morning and again at night. If I see my weight going up I just cut back what I eat. I do eat a balanced diet, veggies, fruits, mainly try to eat some of all the food groups.

Exercise I use weights sparingly, but i still use them. The main thing I do is try to walk at least 30 minutes a day.

When you eat you dont have to clean your plate leave something on there.

You have to burn off more calories than you put in. I got as low as 150 for a while but I had no energy. 160 to 165 seems to be my ideal range.

Im 5 ft 11 in if that matters.

I think you just have to make a lifestyle adjustment to get in shape and then just keep at it.

When I raced motorcycles I stayed in the 185 lb range. I ran at that time 3-4 times a week, but my knees are so beat up that I had to stop running.

Good Luck

I do Chris!

And I absolutely love swimming! But right now I'm penny pinching and I can't really afford a membership to the indoor pools. I'm closing on a house next Friday, have child support payments that are coming due, and I'm trying to save money for a trip to Germany in April.

But it is an interesting idea... Maybe my mum would spring for the membership.

Yes water is a most important link.
You cant burn fat without that hydrogen ion.

I'm no chemist Sans. Can you explain a bit more? I'm really interested in what you have to say.

If it wasn't 02:53 hrs I might try.

If my poor old addled brain recalls it's all part of the Krebs cycle.
The cellular production of energy.
A thumb nail would be that the musculature burns first stored ATP
I have heard it said that the first 30-45 minutes of hiking uses only ATP stores. So if you walk to burn fat you have to walk longer, no less than an hour. Not that the shorter walks don't burn kilo-calories you just don't actually begin to metabolize adipose stores.
The process of converting stored fat into energy requires free hydrogen ions.
I know thats vague, but it's been many years since I studied A & P.
And being a Kung Fu man, I really homed in on these tidbits and did my best to remember them in layman's terms.

wow, now my brain hurts! I mentioned the pool as a low-impact way of exercising. You work more muscles swimming than walking and because you're suspended, there's no impact on joints.

I don't think I'd swallow public pool water for that ion tho ;)

When I had my irritable bowel disorder I went from 230 down to 189. I felt terrible! Right now I weigh between 213 and 217 and I feel great! I've got a rather high metabolism (when it isn't clogged with undigested material, i.e irritable bowel) and I need to keep my weight up. My son recently went from 240 down to 200, primarily by NOT drinking ANY carbonated beverages and increasing his fiber. I did it to get him to a more manageable weight but I think he actually got stronger in the process. Being overweight results in SERIOUS health problems. Whether you're overweight or underweight it's a VERY GOOD THING to try and achieve better health through better diet and exercise. Everyone is going to die, I just don't want to suffer much along the way...

That's a good point Bob. I could do a lot better for myself. I know how, I've done it before. But I sure enjoy my toxins these days.

Swimming is an excellent exercise for low impact on the joint capsules as well as an overall musculature tone.

I used to practice my Gung Fu at the lake or pool quite a lot.

everyone has to find has to find their own metabolic understanding.
when I am working heavy 5,6 thousand cals a day barely cut it. the last thing I want to do is suddenly drop 10 pounds because that would be a major warning signal that something is not right.
when you can bench 310 or more that just means you have to have tremendous muscle mass compared to fat.30 lbs because of muscle is just the thing that will put you into the obese charts.
one thing you have to be carefull of when you lose weight , is to be sure it is not muscle mass. some people have just have the the abuility to store energy more efficiently, fat.
These might well be the people that are able to survive if we have a total natural disaster.
When I look at people I try to find what is in their hearts,I dont think anyone should be chastised because of their weight. IMHO.

I don't think chastise is the appropriate approach either Glen.
But obesity is our nations leading co-morbidity in health care. One additional pound of adipose adds approx a mile of capillary to your circulatory load. ( can you say hypertension, stroke & heart attack )
Eat all they want and die fat is fine with me as long as I am not footing the bill.

The charts are wrong !!!
When I was at my fittest point in years the charts showed me to be obese for my height / frame. Yet my body fat percentage tested between 12 & 14.
I don't normally appear to be muscular, but put a little stress on my frame and I looked if I was carved from wood. While transferring patients (physically lifting them into a standing position) after their hip or knee surgeries more than once people whom touched my arms would comment that I felt as if I was made of wood.
This is not to brag but to demonstrate just how inappropriate the medical charts are.

You scale is mostly irrelevent but mirrors rarely lie.

Glen, when I was following calories, I found that for me around 2700-3000 calories a day covers my needs.

I mentioned cokes, next time you pick one up check out how many calories are in a can. Just some simple adjustments to your diet can net some great results. All foods have thier calories on the can or package jsut being aware of whats in your favorite foods can make a big difference.

One thing I did once was drink ice waterin the morning. Your body has to overcome the temp differential and you burn more clories pluc you jump start your metabolism.

I wish you luck in your training and weight loss.

I'm back on tea in the AM, I read a study that reported men who drank tea had thinner waist lines. I love coffee but I put sugar and milk in it, tea I drink black.

But that damned coffee pot is just so easy. :(
I keep saying to myself 'Get back on the tea'. But I never do.

One day I'll come out of it but I think that will happen when the coffee maker is no longer here.
