Wotcha Yod,
Listening to you I rather doubt you'd want to stay at home and do all of those earthly and what some people call, normal daily routines would you? What you have going sounds like a lot of fun frankly, and something I'd love to do. For me that will just have to wait awhile I think.
More power to you in any case for being proactive on it all.
Best wishes
Chippy

Germany, England, Poland (recording a new CD there) sounds like fun, eh?

I'd love to cancel it all and watch the Hall of Fame game between the Cowboys and the Dolphins this weekend while chewing on some good ole' Texas BBQ instead.

It will be fun and an unforgettable adventure (again)...but my butt's already sore thinking about the long plane rides.

Oy!

Yes, couldn't agree more. Did you actually listen to anything I had posted online here and there?

Yes indeed. Not on bandmix, but on your site. And they are very professionally done. I also liked what you had to say, thus I replied. I am sure you do take your music material seriously, I can hear it.

My post about digital is more for people who do not see digital media as just another tool in the hands of an artist. Just like a drum kit, a guitar or a violin. If an artist (composer / producer) cant play say a violin or a flute nowadays it does not mean that this artist can't make a record with flute or violin and hand an MP3 and a PDF with notes to a hired professional violinist to play. That is awesome. In my unprofessional opinion it is much better then meeting in a rehearsal room and trying to explain your bandmates: "Ok, let's jam in Em for an hour. You play boo boo boo, and while he does that you do trum trum". Which then ends up in a jam session, nothing is accomplished at the end and everyone goes home with false feeling of satisfaction of an evening well spent.

Besides, it is fun to hear you ideas sound back at you in the form you wanted them to sound in the first place.

Fantasy the only thing that turns it into a jam session is if the one in charge lets it.

I dont use charts and when Ive worked with some people we do sit there and hum a melody line then work it out and play it. You have to play with people that have the ability to turn ideas into sounds, if the people cant do it then you need people that can.

And precisely that is very rare, is it not? A band of brothers in the studio that can feed from each other. If you have that sort of a band and that sort of chemistry count your blessings for you are very lucky.

My personal experience was quite the opposite. I am not saying that everyone should write electronically. Not at all. Plenty of awesome music was (is) written in live collaboration. If you have such group of people around you - you are very fortunate indeed.

No I dont think its rare, or not to me anyway, most of the people I have on my call list are capable of just working thru things quickly and making it happen.

Dude I worked in a song writting studio back in the early 80s in Nashville Tn, these cats would come in and have no idea what they were gonna play and lay down up to 4 songs in just a couple of hours. Just a basic chord chart with meter and go, then maybe fill in a couple of hooks.

Pretty simple stuff for me and my friends, you just need to find some better collaborators.

Deep Purple Highway Star was written on the way to a gig. True rock and roll anthem made in true rock and roll style. I do not deny that. Golden Earring wrote Radar Love in just a few hours in the middle of the night. List goes on... It all depends on people you with.

Perhaps people you meet is a geographical thing. No? In my neighborhood we were not lucky enough to meet like-minded people. People we've met around Oregon and North Cali mostly guys who want to be another Metallica or another Dream Theater. Metallica and Dream Theater are cool. But those bands took their own path, not trying to be another Motor Head or another Iron Maiden.

To the cats we met what we want to do is either too melodic or too soft or not electronic enough etc. I am sure there are other people in the same boat as us no matter what genre they play. Digital tools provide an outlet for folks like us. But one does not have to use digital, if one does not have to. :) It is just a useful tool if one knows how and wants to use it.

And yes, there are songs written for three instruments using a progression of two or three chords. Nothing wrong with that.

Hello there EF.
Firstly thank you very much indeed for taking the time. I did also with your music, and although I've read what you said about the change in genre, wonder how you went about that?
I have so many influences though many folks will never hear them thinking I'm just a 'Genesis Freak', which might be true in some instances, but in the main, my value is Classical Rock I suppose.

In the main I chose just the instruments that I (think) will be involved, again with a view to not only keeping it real, but with a real intent for, (some of it to be played - eventually).

I agree, I've been there too where ideas are just lackluster, nothing happens and the evening seems a waste of time. However I'm pretty guarded against making these past events the event of my future. I've had some great times with bands, wonderful moments in fact, which make the bad times seem like little entities.
Agreed too, nice to hear what you have in your head kick back isn't it.
Best wishes to you.

Shalom EF,

I find it interesting that you mention Goa. I don't think many would be familiar with that genre.

I "discovered" Infected Mushroom in early 2001 while doing a search on mp3.com for local bands in Tel Aviv. Though they have created their own style of psychotrance, they started out as masters of Goa and were just 2 teenagers in Holon at the time. The rest is history...but I've always had an interest in Goa (even if most Goa fans would find me too old)

Anyway, nice to virtually meet you and find out that you aren't a girl with pointy ears.

And as you referenced, for many years I used digital tools and loop-based recordings to make demos for studio musicians because I can't read/write music to give them.

I could form my ideas in advance and they could get the general idea quickly. I could save as much as 30 hours of studio time by getting the pre-production done at home on Acid 4, then bring it into a real studio and have them go over my home-made tracks where I played all the instruments (poorly).

I know electronic drums is kosher for techno-ish styles, but I found that experimenting with loops of real drummers inspired many songs for me. Basically, it was jamming with a studio-level musician who was mic'd and playing in perfect meter.
