I don't think Kenny G's success as an instrumentalis has anything to do with it. Matheny is a skilled and imaginative musician and I think he was using his musicianship to judge Kenny G.
I just don't think so. It was FAR TOO VENEMOUS for being an onjective critique. Metheny is ANGRY AS HELL. That is not objective. That has personal disgust written all over it. And it wasn't just the part about laying tracks over someone else's song, but it ran through the whole thing.
To me, it would almost be like being the best baseball player BY FAR on a team, but someone with far less talent than you, gets paid the big bucks, and you are reduced to a second stringer, even though YOU are the one with the real talent.
It doesn't apply to sports. I think Metheny is PISSED that this is the way it is, for commercial music. Someone ELSE, LESS TALENTED getting more spotlight, more money, more fame, more Oprah... LOL - I would think Metheny is fed up, because of how unfair it "seems".
I don't know.... He's REALLY REALLY ANGRY for some reason.
I felt this way for many years. The only reason I am commenting on this is because Pat Matheny is involved. Pat Matheny is a fine musician. Kenny G. has left a bad taste in my mouth. I've seen them both in concert. You can defend Kenny G. all you want, it won't make him any better. If Kenny G is a talented musician, he ain't showin' it. I don't care how much money KG makes or how popular he is, I have no financial or commercial stakes in whether Kenny G. is successful or not. I still don't see him as having the skill or talent that is comparable to Pat Matheny. I also feel that Pat Matheny has the competence to express sentiments similar to my own.
