Jeff, thanks for the link. I would have been 4 years old when Eric Dolphy did this. I confess that jazz is way over my head as a non-educated player, though I do love to sing it. I'm about 24 minutes into this album and it reminds me of the Klezmatics. You ever listen to them?

But I had always heard that Weather Report was the first "jazz fusion" or "acid jazz" band. What, if anything, was their breakthrough contribution if not?

"jeff"??? i'm sure you meant "mark" but since our views on religion and politics so closely mirror one another...we're often confused!!!

's ok...i've been called worse.

i don't think Weather Report was the FIRST fusion band.....rightfully or not that's usually credited to miles w his albums "Jack Johnson" and "Bitches Brew". i think WR was likely the most popular of the 70's fusion groups along w Return To Forever being a close second.

WR big contributions? well, i think they introduced a lot of rock and rollers to "jazz" and maybe got them to go back and check out some of WR's influences or groups that members like Joe Zawinul and Wayne Shorter played w earlier.....

when people think of the bass playing on WR's body of work they usually think Jaco who made enormous contributions to the instr, but prior to him Miroslav Vituos and later Alphonso Johnson played some wicked stuff on the earlier albums.

then too there are the compositions.....Zawinul, Wayne Shorter, and Jaco wrote a lot of amazing tunes. one more contribution comes to mind.....Zawinul's use of synths in jazz.

i'm sure there are others that i'm not thinking of as well.

Here are the top most recent comments of listeners. I had to post this because I agree with most of the comments.

I can kinda see how some people may like this (I personally don't), but what turns me off about it is the community; whom think they're somehow gods among men for liking this music. Maybe not all are like that, but the ones I've met are.

you know...you can say the same thing about zealous fans of just about any genre who think they're special because of their chosen genre.... "grassholes" (bluegrass purists).....gypsy jazzers.....trad jazzers.....those who only listen to "real" country music made before 1965....etc.

here's something a little more recent than the eric dolphy album for you to check out....

Yes, I meant Mark. Sorry, but thanks for the graceful reply and the education.

Again, this is not Teddyland. I don't care if you were the first person to join this site. People actually 'like to fight w/ you'?? Do you know why?? You are stubborn. You don't understand anything beyond the front of your nose. I'm not try to 'teach' you. I am trying to make you are aware of things that lie beyond the front of your nose. Mahatma Ghandi was not a brand of rice.

Yes, mama.

So what you're doing is "avant garde" (because you say so), but what I'm doing is not, though I've created my own genre. Got it. Yes, ma'am.

No, I actually complimented a piece of your work but you dismissed it. You aren't doing anything 'avant-garde'. It's Contemporary Christian music. Started around the early 80s. Petra, Don Francisco, Keith Green, Amy Grant......want me to name a few more?? VR?? Who cares??

There's no reason to explain to you why that statement is pure ignorance...but it's obvious you haven't a clue. Please stop with the phony sincerity.

I'll give you this much. At least you are honest about being a grouchy rude asshole. Now we're getting somewhere. So why are you pushing back??

Because you're pushing.

Why so defensive??

I don't get defensive until you try to imply I don't know anything.

Why do you feel intimidated by me??

What??? Not in the least...

Annoyed is the word your looking for. I'm irritated by your relative incompetence, which you disguise as if it's more noble to be an amateur, by dismissing almost anything I say. Fine, I understand most people on this board are not trying to be a professional musician. That shouldn't diminish the opinions those of us who are.

Disagreement is fine...but quit telling me how you want me to act or react. I don't need your approval.

there is music performed by Slacker that unless you are a virtuoso of some sort, it will never be recreated because of Slacker's advanced technique ability , motor skills basically, you can't cop it no matter how hard you try, that is saying something about a true musical artist, not by how much baloney you can conjure up about your next no, or little -pays gig :D

A qualified "YES"

Show me even one place where I called your stuff "crap" or judged it's value? That's not possible. I once made a generic statement on a genre you mentioned. It had nothing to do with you personally.

Yet, on the other hand, I've gotten several presumptive statements about my motives and my music from your direction that only proved you don't know me. Stop that and we never had a problem in the first place.
