I'm putting together a band thats playing a mix of original and cover tunes. What are the standard rock songs every band needs to know. Classic rock to current.

I'd much rather play something they don't know AND get asked to gig at that venue again. That means you're playing something REALLY kick ass...

So odd for me to see those lists these days. With the music I'm playing, a cover list would look more like this:

Stir it up
Jamrock
Sweat
collie herb
Angel
Red Wine
Jammin
Night Nurse
Dream
Ganja Farmer

Crazy s**t..

Here's one of mine from several years back. Already had it on the computer so all I had to do was cut and paste, and I'm a lazy bastid. :)
They're not in the order that we play them. I just keep it on stage and call out what I think the crowd wants at the time.

I hear ya, Phil. Problem is, the crowds around here love it, and we try to cater to them. Back in the late '90's I got together with some friends and put a band together playing some really cool newer stuff. We were having a blast doing it, but everywhere we played, I kept getting, "I don't like your new band, they don't play the good stuff that you use to." And the crowds dwindled. The band faded away. And ever since then, I haven't been playing much, but when I do, this is the stuff we play to keep the crowds happy. I still dream of putting an ultimate band together that could play anything and make the crowd go wild, but realistically, not only would it be tough to find like minded musicians, then we'd have that crowd mentality to battle. What's a guy to do?

Go for a different audience, Jeff. The jam bands do quite well with the younger crowds. Play a Phish tune or a cpl Dead tunes, & then go off & play all sorts of odd stuff & you'll get a following. It's fun to play, too, as long as you play better than that Jerry Garcia slop-fiend!

I think I would take up knitting before I would play any of those songs. But we do mix in a few covers with our stuff.

The covers The Farleys play:

Pills - The New York Dolls
I Wanna Live - The Ramones
Search & Destroy - The Stooges
Bop Pills - The Cramps
Wonderful Wino - Frank Zappa
Into The Drink - Mudhoney
Helter Skelter/Don't Pass Me By - The Beatles
Son of a Gun - Nirvana

The covers Tuna Finger play:

Some Girls Are Bigger Than Others - The Smiths
High Fivin' MF - Local H
Powertrip - Monster Magnet
Rock & Roll - Lou Reed
Idiot Walk - The Hives
Heroin Girl - Everclear
Get Free - The Vines
